The Classic 1733 is the second of three Classic models from Blumenhofer Acoustics, a German company that has built loudspeakers since 1977 near Munich under founder Thomas Blumenhofer. The series was a collaboration with Old School HiFi, which asked for speakers with a period look that would still be engineered in the usual Blumenhofer manner. Within the range the 1733 sits above the compact two-way 1722 and yields only to the larger 1743. The complete Classic family is now shown on the Blumenhofer archive of discontinued products.
Key specs that matter
Three drivers are arranged as a three-way floorstanding system. Low frequencies come from a 380 mm (16 inch) paper woofer, which crosses over at 215 Hz to a 250 mm (10 inch) midrange with a paper P2F sandwich cone. From 1,200 Hz upwards a compression driver loaded by a horn with a 1 inch throat takes over, and its diaphragm is a 44 mm (1.75 inch) Mylar membrane. Blumenhofer specifies a frequency range of 30 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 2 dB and an efficiency of 95 dB. Each cabinet measures 106 x 46 x 42 cm and weighs 35 kg.
Engineering and use context
Because a separate cone handles the midrange, the big woofer covers only the lowest band, while the compression driver works only above the upper crossover point. The enclosure is made of HDF complex material 18 mm thick, with structural bracing working inside to stiffen the walls. Low-frequency loading is bass reflex with the port facing forward on the front panel. Spike feet are supplied with the 1733, whereas the smaller 1722 ships without them. The company, which Andrea Vitali joined as co-owner in 2001, describes its aim as high-efficiency loudspeakers for the home and credits Thomas Blumenhofer with more than 35 years of work in professional audio for concerts and discos before and alongside home hi-fi. According to Blumenhofer, component choices such as drivers, capacitors and cabinet materials follow decades of technical and acoustic research at the firm.
Pairing
The 1733 presents a nominal 8 ohm load and accepts up to 150 W RMS, which gives the ceiling for amplifier power. It connects through a single set of terminals in gold-plated tellurium copper, so one cable per channel is used and bi-wiring is not provided.
Alternatives
The Blumenhofer Classic 1743 is the larger three-way model in the series, with two 380 mm woofers, a 300 mm midrange, a 3 inch titanium compression driver, 97 dB efficiency and a weight of 90 kg.
