The Capello 80 AL is a passive 2.5-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Gauder Akustik, which builds its speakers in Renningen, Germany. The Capello series replaced two earlier Gauder lines, the Cassiano and the Vescova, and consists of the Capello 40 compact monitor, the Capello 80 and Capello 100 floorstanders and the Capello Center. The newly developed XPulse bass and midrange chassis are the main change from those predecessor lines.

Key specs that matter

The Capello 80 combines black XPulse bass/midrange drivers with a hand-selected high-resolution aluminium tweeter. Gauder rates the nominal impedance at 4 ohm and the power handling at 190 W. The cabinet stands 109 cm tall, 25 cm wide and 42 cm deep, and each speaker weighs 24 kg. As standard the speaker comes in piano lacquer, either black or white high gloss, while olive or walnut veneers cost nothing extra.

Engineering and use context

Gauder gives the Capello 80 a drop-shaped enclosure, which Gauder uses to avoid disruptive reflection and diffraction effects at the enclosure surfaces. The bass reflex enclosure vents downward, while the bass-midrange driver works in its own closed chamber. The patented XPulse cones use aluminium polymer diaphragms designed so that their resonances fall above 3,400 Hz, outside the working range of the midrange driver. The symmetrical crossover is equipped with Mundorf components and uses a slope of 60 dB per octave, and Gauder implements TDC Time Delay Control for time correction between the drivers. Across the series, crossover parts come only from the German suppliers Mundorf and Intertechnik. Internal wiring uses Clearwater cable. Low-frequency output can be tuned with the variable Bass Extension System, whose replaceable modules give a boost between 30 Hz and 70 Hz in six steps, and the bass volume is adjustable in three stages. The aluminium tweeter can later be upgraded to a beryllium dome tweeter, whose moving mass Gauder puts at half that of the tweeters it used before.

Pairing

A bi-wiring terminal with WBT NextGen binding posts lets each speaker be connected with two separate cable runs, feeding the bass/midrange and tweeter branches of the crossover independently. Given the low nominal impedance, the right partner is an amplifier rated to drive such loads without strain.
