The BL-20 Boogie! is a floorstanding loudspeaker from the Birdland Series of Lindemann, the German electronics and loudspeaker maker, introduced around 2011. The model was previously called Boogie!, while the larger BL-30 was formerly the Swing!, and the series also included the BL-10. The speakers were made by hand in Germany with a five-year warranty, and the Birdland Series has since been discontinued, with Lindemann's current loudspeakers being the Move, Move Mini and Groove.
Key specs that matter
The BL-20 is a 2.5-way design with two Accuton 150 mm ceramic-cone drivers and a 26 mm Eton neodymium tweeter with a ceramic-coated magnesium dome, custom-made for Lindemann. Frequency response is 48 Hz to 22 kHz at -3 dB, sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Thermal power handling is 100 W, and Lindemann recommends amplifiers from 10 W into 4 ohm. The cabinet measures 1075 mm high, 250 mm deep and 170 mm wide, the foot 295 x 265 mm, and the speaker weighs 24.5 kg including the foot.
Engineering and use context
The bass is loaded by a floor-vented resonator whose opening faces the floor, which Lindemann says makes placement uncritical. The crossover follows Lindemann's Intelligent Minimum Phase Crossover principle, in which slopes follow the natural transfer function of the drivers and are optimised by computer for minimum phase, leaving only one component in the midrange signal path. Mundorf copper-foil inductors and handmade Master Reference capacitors for the tweeter are used. Internal wiring is cryogenically treated Kind of Blue pure copper, and the cryogenically treated, gold-plated terminals from Switzerland accept 4 mm bananas or spades of 6 to 8 mm. The cabinet is a multilayer composite of birch plywood, cork and furniture linoleum, selected for low weight, high rigidity and internal damping to keep energy from being stored in the walls. The linoleum surface comes in twelve two-tone combinations, one colour on the sides and top and another on the front and back. The foot is made of stainless steel traverses resting on ceramic balls and tonewood.
Pairing
With its high sensitivity and modest power recommendation, the BL-20 works with low-power amplifiers as long as they are stable into low impedances, including Lindemann's own electronics.
Alternatives
The Lindemann BL-30, formerly the Swing!, is the larger Birdland model with two 180 mm Accuton ceramic drivers and bass to 32 Hz.
