The Beethoven Concert Grand Reference is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker belonging to the Austrian Concert Grand range by Vienna Acoustics. It uses five drivers, flat composite cones in the midrange and bass, and a cabinet in which each driver group has its own chamber. The design keeps gentle filter slopes and a passive crossover assembled from close-tolerance parts.

Key specs that matter

Vienna Acoustics fits a hand-coated 1.1 inch silk dome tweeter, a 6 inch midrange and three 7 inch woofers. All four cone drivers use the Composite Cone construction with a flat X4P spidercone diaphragm and a recessed fabric centre cone. The rated range runs from 28 Hz to 23,000 Hz, sensitivity is 90 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohm, while the recommended amplifier power spans 50 to 400 W. Without its base the cabinet is 206 mm wide, 1130 mm high and 381 mm deep, and fitting the base brings it to 307 x 1191 x 381 mm. Vienna Acoustics lists a weight of 75 kg per pair. Finishes are rosewood, cherry, and piano lacquer in black or white.

Engineering and use context

Mid and bass drivers use identical flat diaphragms, so the same material covers the band from the lowest notes up to the tweeter handover. Filtering combines pure first-order slopes of 6 dB per octave with Bessel second-order sections. Polypropylene capacitors held to 1 percent tolerance and coils held to 0.7 percent are used throughout, with air core coils for the midrange and tweeter and a special powder core coil in the bass section. Resistors are inductance-free metal film types at 1 percent. The ported enclosure is assembled with European joinery methods, and an articulated bracing structure stiffens the walls. Separate enclosures inside the cabinet isolate the drivers from one another. Veneers are selected by hand and the lacquered versions receive a true piano finish. A tall and relatively narrow tower of this kind suits a medium to large room rather than a space of about 20 m2.

Pairing

The low nominal impedance and a band of three woofers require a partner that copes well with a low impedance and delivers generous current, for example a high-current solid state design, either stereo or split into two monoblocks. Its generous power ceiling leaves room for powerful designs, while the high sensitivity means a moderately powered unit can also drive it in a smaller room.

Alternatives

A more compact floorstanding option from Vienna Acoustics is the Beethoven Baby Grand Reference.
