Of the two Aviano towers made by Mordaunt-Short, the Aviano 6 is the more compact one. The British company behind it was established in 1967 and is owned by Audio Partnership. Mordaunt-Short called Aviano its signature range, and the models were designed at its centre on London's South Bank. Next to the Aviano 6 the lineup included the Aviano 1, 1 XR and 2 stand-mounts, the Aviano 5 centre, the larger Aviano 8 tower and the Aviano 7 and 9 subwoofers. The range dates from around 2009.

Key specs that matter

The cabinet holds three drivers. A 1 inch aluminium dome tweeter works with two 6.5 inch mid/bass units that have aluminium CPC cones. A damped second-order DVP network divides the signal, and the rear-ported cabinet is rated at 38 Hz to 22 kHz. Sensitivity is 88 dB, impedance is 4 to 8 ohm, and the suggested amplifier range is 15 to 150 W. Each speaker is 950 mm high, 205 mm wide and 298 mm deep and weighs 17.3 kg. Finishes offered were dark walnut, rosewood and black.

Engineering and use context

CPC means Continuous Profile Cone, a shape Mordaunt-Short uses so that the diaphragm travels pistonically in the bass and breaks up in a controlled way higher up. The woofers use a V-Form cone-to-surround connection whose varying thickness keeps the diaphragm rigid, and their self-shielding neodymium magnet assemblies are rated for higher flux density. Magnetic shielding is effective within 50 mm of the cabinet. The tweeter has a high-temperature voice coil with liquid cooling and damping, set in a housing shaped by computer modelling to control dispersion. Inside, the crossover is isolate-mounted and built with high-saturation inductors, dual value parallel capacitors and oversized resistors. The front baffle is curved for stiffness, bracing links the enclosure and drive units, and high-density wadding damps internal standing waves. Metal spikes screw into the base so the column can be levelled on carpet, and the bullet terminals take bananas, spade lugs or unterminated wire. Using the same tweeter and cone types as the Aviano 2 and Aviano 5 lets a surround set use matched drive units across all channels.

Pairing

A stereo amplifier or AV receiver that stays stable into 4 ohm is the sensible match, and the moderate sensitivity means moderate amplifier output reaches normal listening levels. With the port venting rearwards, a gap of free air behind each tower is advisable. In a surround layout the maker grouped it with the Aviano 5 centre, Aviano 1 or 2 rears and an Aviano 7 or 9 subwoofer.

Alternatives

The Mordaunt-Short Aviano 8 adds a third CPC unit in a 320 mm deep cabinet and extends the rated bass to 35 Hz.
