Audes builds the Adagio as a two-way tower within its Credo family, and the maker's headquarters are in Johvi, Estonia. The company dates its origins to 1935, when the radio receiver works RET was entered in the register in Tallinn. Driver production and speaker assembly moved from Tallinn to Johvi in 1985, the brand name Audes, short for Audio from Estonia, arrived in 1992, and in-house cabinet making began a year later. The maker intends the Adagio for two-channel audio and for home cinema alike. The Credo line also contains the Grand Blues, Blues and Jazz towers, the Studio bookshelf model and the Sentral and Grand Sentral centre speakers.

Key specs that matter

One 6.5 inch woofer with a paper cone, an Audes design produced in-house, works with a 1 inch fabric soft-dome tweeter through a network that crosses over at 1,800 Hz. The stated response runs from 46 Hz to 22,000 Hz within plus or minus 2 dB, and the -6 dB bass corner falls at 37 Hz. Sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and the nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Power handling is listed as 120 W long-term and 160 W short-term. Each Adagio weighs 26 kg, and the front grille can be removed.

Engineering and use context

Audes states that Credo speakers are made largely by hand, from the cabinets through to the crossovers. The line uses DH Labs wire for all internal wiring and Mundorf polypropylene capacitors in the crossover networks. Drivers across the Credo range come from SEAS as well as from the company's own production. Standard Credo finishes are fine natural wood veneers in mahogany, black ash, cherry and walnut. As an option, Audes offers exotic veneers such as burl wood, supplied either in a matte finish or in a fine piano polish.

Pairing

Audes developed the Sentral centre as a high-end home theatre product and states that it is voice-matched to every speaker in the Credo line, which includes the Adagio. Its drivers are a pair of 130 mm cones and a 27 mm dome, with 89 dB sensitivity. The larger Grand Sentral is a two-way bass-reflex centre intended as a partner for the Blues, Grand Blues and Jazz, using two woofers crossed over at 2,000 Hz in a 16 kg cabinet.

Alternatives

The Audes Jazz from the same Credo line is a floorstander with two woofers and a soft-dome tweeter, weighing 34 kg.
