The v.1 is a compact two-way monitor sold by Evolution Acoustics Pro, the professional division of the San Diego loudspeaker maker Evolution Acoustics, under the Brian Lucey Signature Series name. It is offered as a complete package in which the speakers come with a dedicated power amplifier and a set of cables, so the v.1 is a matched system rather than a passive pair alone.

Key specs that matter

A 2 inch soft-pleat AMT tweeter works with a 5.5 inch ceramic matrix mid-woofer with a long throw suspension, divided by a crossover at 1.7 kHz. The quoted response is 35 Hz to 45 kHz at the 3 dB points, and the maker gives a separate linearity figure of 50 Hz to 40 kHz within plus or minus 2 dB. Sensitivity is 85 dB into a nominal 4 ohm load, and maximum SPL is listed at 102 dB. Each speaker is about 292 mm high, 191 mm wide and 292 mm deep and weighs about 11.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

The mid-woofer has a peak to peak excursion of 24 mm, which is a large figure for a cone of 5.5 inches. The cabinet uses a bass-reflex alignment, with a port whose tuning the owner is able to change. Included in the package is a Class AB power amplifier with an output of 300 W per channel at 4 ohm, housed in a chassis of about 483 x 89 x 406 mm that weighs about 16.8 kg. Measured against the speaker data, the v.1 shares its drivers, crossover point, response, size, weight and electrical data with the consumer MODEL ONE. The MODEL ONE is built with a non-resonant CAMDAL enclosure of up to 8 constrained layers and an EXACT constant voltage series crossover, sells at USD 3,780 per pair as a passive speaker, and it was shown for the first time in June 2024 at a California audio show, while the Pro version is sold only as the amplified package.

Pairing

The package already includes its amplification and wiring. Supplied with it are 3 m custom speaker cables, a 1.75 m Shunyata Research THETA NR power cord, a 1 m pair of Cardas Audio XLR input cables and an Acme Audio Labs ceramic fuse upgrade. The XLR leads indicate that the system takes a balanced line signal from a source, DAC or monitor controller feeding the amplifier directly.

Alternatives

The Evolution Acoustics MICROONE is an earlier stand-mount model from the discontinued Micro series, using a PDAV tweeter and a 4 inch ceramic mid-woofer.
