The TD-C8 is a passive three-way bookshelf speaker from Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics in China, and the company says it designed the model with high-definition home theatre systems in mind, although it lists the speaker in its Hi-Fi series. Tonewinner markets the pair as a 440 W system, which corresponds to twice the upper end of the single-speaker amplifier rating. The TD-C8-A version pairs an MDF cabinet with walnut veneer on the sides and two silver aluminium alloy rings framing the tweeter and the midrange unit.
Key specs that matter
Tonewinner fits a 1 inch tweeter, a 5 inch midrange and an 8 inch bass unit - with crossover points at 3,500 Hz between tweeter and midrange and at 800 Hz between midrange and woofer. The quoted frequency range is 38 Hz to 22 kHz, sensitivity is 85 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. Tonewinner specifies amplifiers of 50 to 220 watts. The enclosure measures 260 x 485 x 310 mm, each speaker weighs 12.5 kg net, and a packed pair weighs 28 kg.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter uses a Tetoron dome of paraboloid shape driven by an aluminium iron boron (neodymium) magnet, and a custom aluminium alloy heat radiator lets it take high power. The midrange cone is woven from two layers of carbon fibre so it can be thin yet durable, and its motor carries a KSV voice coil. For the woofer Tonewinner chose a long-stroke cone of mica mixed with semi-loose pressed paper, valued for strength and damping, on a rubber surround that allows large low-frequency excursions. All three units share aluminium alloy frames, voice coil formers of heat-resistant aluminium-magnesium alloy, 5N oxygen-free copper wire and large permanent magnets. The crossover combines metallised polypropylene film (MKP) capacitors with OFC coils, adjusted through repeated testing to smooth the transition between bands. Bass is loaded by a reflex port, and the corners of the MDF cabinet are polished round.
Pairing
The low nominal impedance and high upper power rating call for a receiver or amplifier that is rated into 4 ohms with generous output. Since the maker targets home theatre, an AV receiver such as one of the Dolby Atmos models in the Tonewinner catalogue can drive the TD-C8 as main left and right channels, while any two-channel amplifier rated for such loads handles purely two-channel listening.
Alternatives
For a two-way layout Tonewinner offers the TD-9 bookshelf speaker, which uses a 7 inch mid-bass unit and an 8 ohm load.
