The SWING is the compact stand-mount two-way loudspeaker sold under the Apertura name by Stentor SAS of Puceul in western France. It opens a nine-model range that climbs through the SENSA, STELA, ARMONIA Evolution and FORTE up to the EDENA Evolution, KALIBRATOR Evo, ADAMANTE and ENIGMA mkII at the top, and the company celebrated 35 years of activity in 2018. The maker says it can sit classically on a stand, rest on a piece of furniture or be built into a bookshelf where space is short.
Key specs that matter
It uses a 16 cm mid/woofer and a 25 mm dome tweeter, crossed over at 3.5 kHz. Apertura gives a frequency range of 48 Hz to 40,000 Hz within 3 dB, a sensitivity of 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Each cabinet is 190 mm wide, 310 mm deep and 280 mm high and weighs 7.6 kg net. Connection is through banana terminals. Four finishes are offered - piano black and white in high gloss, light oak and American walnut in satin.
Engineering and use context
Its bass driver has a cone woven from polypropylene bands into what Apertura calls an isotactic matrix, a build meant to balance rigidity, low weight and damping. Treble comes from a Ring Radiator type dome. The filter follows the in-house DRIM topology, whose slopes attenuate in three stages, and it is assembled by hand on a board carrying 140 micron copper tracks. Drivers are measured one by one before assembly, and component values in each filter are trimmed to suit that pair. The enclosure uses 18 mm high-thickness panels with an internal dual-cavity framework and a bracing panel, and it is loaded as a bass reflex. Two different damping materials inside the box work against standing waves. The grille holds on by magnets leaving the front free of visible fixings. Acoustic design at Apertura is led by Christian Yvon, with Eric Poyer responsible for the mechanical side and production.
Pairing
The easy load places no special demands on the amplifier, so a typical integrated amplifier of moderate power is a sensible match. Because the SWING is so compact, it can be used on a desk or shelf as well as on dedicated stands. The magnetic grille also carries over from the larger SENSA.
Alternatives
The Apertura SENSA is the brand's other two-way model, a taller 864 mm cabinet with the same woofer size and a 3.8 kHz crossover.
