The Studio II is the smallest loudspeaker from Gershman Acoustics, the Canadian company founded in 1993 by engineer Eli Gershman in Thornhill, Ontario. It is a two-way sealed stand-mount designed as a full-range studio monitor, intended to reproduce the whole audible range without a subwoofer, and it is larger and heavier than most stand-mounts. Its larger siblings include the Studio XdB and the Grand Studio II floorstander, which uses a D'Appolito driver layout.

Key specs that matter

The Studio II combines a 1-inch coated silk-dome tweeter in a dual-chamber housing with an 8-inch extra-thick black anodised aluminium woofer/midrange driven by a four-layer voice coil. Frequency response is 28Hz to 24kHz, sensitivity is 87dB and impedance is 6 ohms, with recommended amplification of 70 to 500W. The cabinet is sealed, with no port on the front or rear. Each speaker measures 43 x 25 x 35.5cm and weighs about 22.7kg. The standard finish is gloss piano black, with magnetic grilles.

Engineering and use context

A sealed box rolls off below its resonant frequency at 12dB per octave rather than the steeper 24dB of a ported design, and it avoids port noise and the timing delay of a resonant port. Reaching such deep bass from a sealed stand-mount requires a large woofer with long travel and a strong motor, which is why Gershman uses an 8-inch cone in a relatively deep cabinet. The anodised aluminium cone is stiff and light, and making it extra thick raises its stiffness further, keeping it pistonic across its range. The four-layer voice coil puts more conductor in the magnetic gap, increasing motor force and power handling. The tweeter's dual-chamber rear housing absorbs the back wave from the dome so it does not reflect back through the diaphragm. The cabinet is built from 1-inch-thick HDF, with side panels curved from front to rear, which stiffens the walls and avoids parallel internal surfaces that would support standing waves. The crossovers are hand-built with point-to-point soldered wiring rather than on printed circuit boards. A single pair of sturdy multi-way binding posts is fitted.

Pairing

Moderate sensitivity combined with the sealed bass alignment makes the Studio II best suited to powerful amplifiers with a firm grip on the woofer. Rigid stands that place the tweeter at ear height complete the installation, and with its deep bass extension a subwoofer is rarely needed.

Alternatives

Gershman Acoustics' own Studio XdB extends the same 8-inch woofer and tweeter concept into a taller cabinet reaching 23Hz.
