The SP5 is a pair of active desktop and bookshelf speakers from FiiO, the Chinese company known for its portable players, DACs and headphone amplifiers. It follows the smaller SP3 and is designed for desktop and nearfield use, home studios and compact hi-fi systems. The cabinet is die-cast aluminium.

Key specs that matter

In each cabinet sit a 5.25 in woofer with a composite fibre cone and a 1 in composite silk dome tweeter. Amplification is four independent channels, 60 W for each woofer and 20 W for each tweeter. Each speaker has its own 120 W power supply. Inputs are RCA, 3.5 mm AUX, balanced XLR and 6.35 mm, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, aptX Adaptive, AAC and SBC. The DACs are ES9068AS chips. Tone controls offer two-stage bass and treble adjustment with two bass extension options, and the FiiO Control app adds a 10-band PEQ. Frequency response is 65 Hz to 20 kHz, or 50 Hz to 20 kHz with bass extension on, and maximum SPL is 104 dB. Each speaker measures about 170 x 185 x 280 mm and weighs about 6 kg. US pricing was USD 999.99 per pair.

Engineering and use context

FiiO states that the woofer cone uses a composite fibre similar to the Continuum material of B&W's 700 Series, and it refined the magnet system, suspension and voice coil for output in larger spaces. The tweeter has a soft hemispherical structure inside the dome that absorbs rearward energy, and a large rear cavity lowers its resonance so that it can work down to 800 Hz. Separate amplifier channels for woofer and tweeter mean the crossover works at line level before the amplifiers, and each driver gets its own amplifier. The dual 120 W supplies keep the two speakers electrically independent, reducing crosstalk. Signal processing is handled in one speaker, which feeds the other through an RCA or RJ45 digital link, and a switch swaps the left and right assignment. Each input remembers its own volume. The volume encoder gives stepless electronic adjustment, and an RGB ring shows the active input. A trigger input switches the speakers on with other equipment. An IR remote and Furukawa oxygen-free copper power cables are supplied. Colours are black and white. FiiO also launched the K15 DAC, headphone amplifier and streamer alongside the SP5.

Pairing

The SP5 connects to a computer by USB-C, a phono-equipped turntable over RCA and a professional interface by XLR. Its size suits desks and rooms up to about 20 m2.
