Venture Audio's QA-1 is the smallest speaker in the QA Series - the maker calls this range the second line of its Quantum Series of active reference loudspeakers. Where the older Quantum 8 and Quantum Signature are large towers, the QA models are sized by the maker for mid-sized and smaller rooms, and among the three QA models only the QA-1 is meant for a shelf or stand. The QA-2 and QA-3 above it are floorstanding versions with more drivers, and the QA-3 adds a third amplifier channel together with two 9 inch woofers.

Key specs that matter

Being a two-way design with its own amplification, each QA-1 cabinet needs a mains connection and a signal cable but no speaker cable. Two amplifier channels are fitted, rated at 500 W and 150 W. A 2 inch AGC unit covers the top end and a 6.5 inch CFGC driver, listed by Venture as a midrange unit, takes everything below it. Input is by XLR only. Venture quotes harmonic distortion of 0.003% and a power bandwidth reaching 25 kHz, and the built-in supply accepts mains voltages anywhere from 85 V to 265 V. Each cabinet measures 39 cm high, 29 cm wide and 32 cm deep and weighs 12 kg.

Engineering and use context

The crossover work is handed to a SHARC processor clocked at 300 MHz. It works at a 96 kHz sample rate with 40 bit floating-point arithmetic, and asynchronous sample rate converters sit at its input. Venture uses the processor to give each driver only the band it handles best while keeping the arrival times of both drivers aligned. The approach follows the brand's first-order filter philosophy used across its passive models, carried over into the digital domain. The CFGC cone embeds long carbon fibres in a graphite composite in a proprietary pattern so it stays stiff enough to move as a piston, and the AGC material uses abaca pulp in its graphite matrix. The cabinet is covered in hand-selected Luxe Amara veneer laid out as a mirror-matched pattern and sealed under high-gloss polyester.

Pairing

The QA-1 only has to be fed by a component that sets the volume and offers XLR outputs, such as a balanced preamplifier or a DAC with digital volume, since amplification and filtering are already inside. Sources with only RCA outputs require an adapter or a converter to balanced.
