The ProMonitor 1000 is a two-way compact speaker made by the American firm Definitive Technology, part of its ProCinema family and intended both as a bookshelf model and as a satellite in a surround system. It may be placed on furniture, on a floor stand or on a wall bracket, and works either on its own as a full-range speaker or together with a subwoofer.

Key specs that matter

Its driver set combines a 1 inch pure aluminium dome tweeter with ferrofluid cooling and a moving coil with a 5.25 inch mid/woofer built with the company's BDSS technology, using a cast basket and a homopolymer cone. This mid/woofer is pressure-coupled to a 5.25 inch passive bass radiator in the same enclosure. Definitive Technology quotes a frequency response of 47 Hz to 30 kHz, a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a recommended amplifier range of 10 to 200 W. Each speaker weighs roughly 3.2 kg, and its cabinet is about 27.5 cm tall, 15.9 cm across and 16.5 cm front to back.

Engineering and use context

The ProMonitor 1000 has no reflex port and relies on a passive radiator driven by the air pressure of the active mid/woofer inside the closed box, a layout the brand calls planar pressure coupling. This extends low-frequency output from a small cabinet without port noise. The enclosure is made of a non-resonant PolyStone material with low-diffraction construction rather than wood. A built-in keyhole on the back accepts toggle bolts or similar anchored fasteners, and once the included stand is removed a plug covers the bottom hole. The mount allows an adjustable angle, so the speaker can be aimed toward the listeners. Definitive Technology covers the drivers and cabinet with a 5-year warranty and electronic parts with a 3-year warranty.

Pairing

The nominal load and wide power window suit most AV receivers and compact stereo amplifiers. The speaker terminals follow the usual colour code, red to the amplifier positive and black to negative. The manual advises never placing rear speakers forward of the listeners, and with a ProSub subwoofer its low-pass control should be turned fully up, to 100 Hz, for this model. In a small 20 m2 room a pair can also serve as main stereo speakers.
