The Premium 301 Wireless Gen2 is the standmount model in the second generation of Piega's active wireless range, which the Swiss company introduced on 27 March 2023 with three speakers - the 301, 501 and 701. It is the only two-way design of the trio, while the two floorstanders are fully active three-way systems. UK pricing was GBP 2,950 per pair in natural aluminium and GBP 3,350 per pair in black anodised or white lacquer.

Key specs that matter

A 140 mm MDS woofer works with the LDR 2642 MKII, a second generation of Piega's handmade Linear Drive Ribbon tweeter with a wave-shaped foil diaphragm. Each cabinet contains 100 W of amplification, split in a ratio of roughly 1 to 3 between tweeter and woofer, with a separate power stage for each driver. Piega quotes a frequency range of 35 Hz to 35 kHz. One box is 34 cm high, 18 cm wide and 23 cm deep and weighs 9 kg.

Engineering and use context

For Gen2 Piega dropped the bass reflex port of the earlier wireless models and closed the enclosure, stating that this helps impulse behaviour and low frequency control and gives more freedom in where the speakers stand. The cabinet is an extruded aluminium profile. Preamplifier, D/A conversion and system control sit outside the speakers in a hub, and the signal travels to them lossless and uncompressed at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz. Two hubs exist - the basic Connect without streaming at EUR 290 and the Connect Plus at EUR 590. The Connect Plus has an HDMI ARC input, three optical inputs and one coaxial input, a USB-B port, two analogue inputs on RCA and 3.5 mm jack, and Bluetooth, and it streams through Spotify Connect, AirPlay, Chromecast and Roon Ready. Selectable radio channels let several systems run in different rooms. Control comes from a wireless remote with LED feedback, paired over Bluetooth, and from the Piega Control app for iOS and Android, while first setup goes through the Google Home app.

Pairing

As the speakers carry their own amplifiers, the hub is the only other box required, and the Connect Plus version turns the set into a complete streaming system for music and television. A TV joins through the HDMI ARC socket on the hub, and a CD transport, a computer or a phono stage can use its digital, USB or analogue inputs.

Alternatives

For a smaller active standmount, Piega offers the ACE 30 Wireless with a 120 mm MDS bass unit and an AMT tweeter in a 22 cm tall aluminium cabinet.
