The MusikBoxx is a two-way stand-mounted design from ModalAkustik, a small maker run by Michael Wydra in Pulheim near Cologne, Germany, where each unit is built by hand. It sits beside the MusikBass subwoofer, which uses the RiPol principle devised by Axel Ridtahler, and the two are designed to be combined into a larger modular system. The box itself contains no crossover. Filtering happens either in the matching external MusikCrss unit or in a DSP, and German pricing is EUR 4,899 per pair for the speakers, EUR 2,299 for a pair of MusikCrss boxes and EUR 899 for the stands.
Key specs that matter
A Dipol AMT tweeter from Mundorf with a very light diaphragm handles the top, and a 15.8 cm ceramic mid/bass driver from Accuton (Thiel & Partner) covers the rest. The passive MusikCrss divides the band at 2.3 kHz. ModalAkustik rates the low end at 78 Hz at -3 dB and 55 Hz at -8 dB. Sensitivity is 82 dB at 1 W and 1 m, and the nominal 8 ohm load falls to a minimum of 6.4 ohm at 153 Hz. The cabinet stands 22.0 cm tall without the tweeter and 31.5 cm with it, is 21.5 cm wide and 28.0 cm deep excluding terminals, and weighs 7.9 kg.
Engineering and use context
ModalAkustik calls its enclosure the Push Push Layered Skeleton Enclosure. Acrylic ribs are braced against each other in opposing directions by stainless steel rods, and damping material is placed around the central longitudinal brace. The box is sealed, with no reflex port. The AMT tweeter is mounted on top of the cabinet as an open dipole, which is why the overall height grows by almost 10 cm. The ceramic cone is chosen to keep the diaphragm from deforming. Moving the filter out of the speaker keeps it away from cabinet vibration - the MusikCrss sits in its own isolated acrylic housing measuring 28.2 x 21.0 x 6.6 cm and weighing 3.4 kg, and it is hand-soldered and freely wired with Mundorf parts and WBT terminals. The dedicated stand uses a tripod layout with little surface area facing the drivers, stands 72.7 cm high with a 28.3 x 18.3 cm top plate and a 42.0 x 25.5 cm footprint, and takes either spikes or absorber feet.
Pairing
Because each driver has its own connection, the MusikBoxx can run passively through the MusikCrss from one stereo amplifier or actively from two stereo amplifiers behind a DSP crossover, for instance one built into a sound processor. The low sensitivity means an amplifier with generous output is needed, while the shallow impedance minimum makes it an easy load. Adding MusikBass units extends the system downward.
Alternatives
ModalAkustik lists no other standmount loudspeaker, since its range consists of the MusikBoxx, the MusikCrss crossover and the MusikBass subwoofer.
