The MPS2520P is an active studio monitor in the Pro Series of M&K Sound, the company that traces its roots to Miller and Kreisel and now operates under Danish ownership. It was built for recording, editing, processing and master mixing of music and film soundtracks, and in a home it can take the left, centre or right position of a multichannel system. The current version is sold as the New Edition and comes in a black satin finish.

Key specs that matter

Five drivers share one compact cabinet - two 5.25 inch glass-fibre bass-midrange units and three 1.1 inch soft fabric domes stacked vertically. Two internal amplifier channels supply 200 W RMS to the woofers and 180 W RMS to the tweeter array, with peak ratings of 400 W and 360 W. Response is 80 Hz to 12 kHz within 1 dB and continues to 20 kHz within 2 dB. Maximum output is 110 dB at 100 Hz, distortion is given as 0.002 percent for the low section and 0.03 percent for the high section, with a 100 dB noise floor below signal. The cabinet measures 327 mm high, 270 mm wide and 401 mm deep and weighs 18 kg.

Engineering and use context

The bass-midrange pair sits in a sealed box tuned to a Q of 0.707, which M&K chose for optimal control of step response. The triple tweeter stack works down to 1.2 kHz, which lets the domes cover part of the midrange. A switch sets vertical directivity to wide or narrow, 50 or 30 degrees. A fixed 80 Hz high-pass filter with a 24 dB slope removes the lowest octaves before they reach the small woofers, so the speaker is meant to run with a subwoofer. Input sensitivity is 100 mV unbalanced or 200 mV balanced for 90 dB at 1 m, and input impedance is 11 kOhm or 22 kOhm respectively, with a maximum input of 24 dBu balanced. Gain adjusts from minus 6 to plus 6 dB, and system and tweeter trims sit beside it. Power draw is 17 W on standby, 45 W on average and up to 360 W, on either 115 V or 230 V mains. An L-shaped stand or wall bracket is included.

Pairing

Connections include balanced XLR and 6.3 mm jacks plus unbalanced RCA sockets, each with a loop-through output, so a studio interface, a stereo preamp or an AV processor output can drive it directly. Because of the fixed high-pass, a powered M&K sealed subwoofer such as the X12+ fills in everything below that point.

Alternatives

The M&K MPS1620P is the smaller active model in the Pro Series, using one 6.5 inch long-stroke driver and a 1 inch dome with 100 W and 50 W RMS amplification.
