The Monitor V is a passive 2-way standmount speaker from Eltax, a brand of Danish origin. The maker describes it as a classic-design speaker system for home use with a good price-to-performance ratio, suited to both stereo listening and home theatre use.

Each cabinet carries an 8 inch mid-bass driver and a 1 inch soft dome tweeter, crossing over to each other at 1900 Hz. Frequency response is 42 Hz to 22 kHz at minus 3 dB, and sensitivity is rated at 90 dB. Nominal impedance is given as 6 to 8 ohm. Eltax specifies a minimum amplifier power of 40 W and a maximum of 150 W. The cabinet is 26 cm wide, 40 cm high and 33 cm deep. The launch price in Europe was EUR 399 per pair.

Engineering and use context

Its enclosure is built from MDF and tuned as a bass-reflex system with a round port exiting at the back. A driver of this size is unusually large for a standmount cabinet, and it is the main reason the rated low end reaches so deep without a separate subwoofer. The tweeter uses a rear chamber dispersion system behind the dome, which absorbs the back wave inside the housing. The low crossover point hands the upper midrange to the tweeter early, so the large cone does not need to reach high frequencies where its dispersion would narrow. A double pair of speaker terminals on the back supports bi-wiring and bi-amping. Several cabinet colours are offered, each with a matching fabric grille in grey or black, and the box includes an installation guide along with the grille. The cabinet volume places the Monitor V between a compact shelf speaker and a small tower, so it works best on dedicated stands rather than inside a bookcase. Compared with the mid-bass driver in the smaller Monitor III, the larger cone has roughly two and a half times the radiating area, which explains the deeper bass limit.

Pairing

The sensitivity rating combined with the modest minimum power requirement lets typical integrated amps and home cinema receivers run the Monitor V to useful levels in a room of about 20 m2. The port at the back calls for a gap from the wall, and sturdy stands that bring the tweeter near seated ear height suit the cabinet height. If a spare stereo amp is available, the split terminals let it power the bass driver and the tweeter independently.
