The Monitor S10 B is a compact bookshelf speaker of the Monitor S family by MAGNAT, a German loudspeaker maker. Built as a passive two-way speaker in a bass reflex cabinet, it is intended for a stereo pair on a shelf, for desktop use next to a computer or as rear speakers in a multichannel film setup. MAGNAT lists the Monitor S80 ATM, Monitor S70, Monitor S30, Monitor S10 D, Monitor S12 C and Monitor S14 C as further members of the series, so the S10 B can be combined with other members of the same line in a larger setup.

Key specs that matter

MAGNAT rates the frequency range at 42 Hz to 32,000 Hz and the sensitivity at 88 dB measured at 2.8 V and 1 m. Nominal impedance is given as 4 to 8 ohm. Power handling is 60 W RMS and 120 W peak, and the maker suggests an amplifier output between 20 W and 120 W. The handover from woofer to tweeter happens at 3,400 Hz. Engineering and use context

The driver set consists of a woofer-midrange unit with a coated paper diaphragm and a distortion-optimised magnet system, and a 13 mm tweeter with a lightweight Mylar dome driven by a ferrite magnet. The woofer-midrange has a pointed conical dome at its centre, and the drivers use ventilated baskets and voice coil cooling. The crossover network is described as phase and amplitude optimised. Cabinet panels are made of E1-grade MDF, chosen for a solid and low-resonance enclosure. Its reflex port is placed on the back panel. Rubber feet on the underside damp resonance between the speaker and the surface it stands on, and a detachable fabric grille covers the front baffle. Cable connection is made through compact terminals with push-type connectors, while a built-in wall bracket on the rear allows the cabinet to hang directly on a wall instead of standing on a shelf.

Pairing

The recommended amplifier range covers compact stereo receivers, integrated amplifiers and AV receivers with moderate power. The impedance rating means the amplifier should be specified for the lower end of that range. In a multichannel system the S10 B can act as the surround pair behind larger Monitor S speakers at the front.
