The Model Three is a two-way acoustic suspension standmount loudspeaker from the American brand KLH. Kloss and two former Acoustic Research employees founded KLH three years after the sealed-box principle appeared in 1954, and they used it in their first loudspeaker, the Model Five. KLH introduced the Model Three as a compact system with mid-century modern styling aimed at listeners with smaller rooms. It is built in Noblesville, Indiana, and currently sells at USD 799.99 each or USD 1,599.98 per pair, with a 10-year warranty.

Key specs that matter

A 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter on a soft rubber surround sits above an 8-inch woofer whose pulp-paper cone moves on a reverse roll surround. The crossover point is 1,500 Hz with a second-order electro-acoustic slope. KLH rates the response at 46 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB, with the -10 dB point at 35 Hz. In-room sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Power handling is 150 W continuous and 600 W peak, and maximum output is given as 108 dB. Without its base the cabinet stands 483 mm high, 311 mm wide and 267 mm deep and weighs 13.2 kg, while with the base fitted it is 718 mm tall, 292 mm deep and 16.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

The sealed enclosure uses structurally reinforced 19 mm MDF covered in real wood veneer, offered as English Walnut, West African Mahogany or Nordic Noir. The woofer is mounted in a non-resonant die-cast aluminium frame and the tweeter in a machined aluminium faceplate. Thirteen components make up the crossover network, which uses iron-core inductors and mylar capacitors. A three-position Acoustic Balance Control on the cabinet sets the output above 400 Hz at 0, -1.5 or -3 dB. The included slant riser base is made of powder-coated 14-gauge steel and tilts the speaker back by 8 degrees. The grille is a low-profile fabric panel held by magnets, and KLH offers it in four versions - Medici Grey Linen, Stone Wash Linen, Old World Linen or Basalt Black Knit.

Pairing

KLH recommends amplifiers from 30 W per channel up to the continuous power handling. The nominal impedance is 6 ohm, but the curve reaches a minimum of 3.7 ohm at 320 Hz. Speaker cables attach to gold-plated five-way binding posts.

The KLH Kendall 2B is a smaller two-way bookshelf model with a 6.5-inch aluminium cone woofer, a titanium dome tweeter, a bass reflex cabinet and an 8 ohm rating.
