The Macbeth is a Kroma Atelier two-way monitor for stand placement, built in Andalucia, Spain, and part of the Signature Series, which also includes the Leonore, Jovita, Matilde and Mercedes. It takes its name from Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth, and the company ties the design to the opera's themes of ambition, betrayal and unchecked power. The UK price is GBP 25,950 per pair.
Key specs that matter
A single AMT tweeter works with an 8 inch woofer that has an anodised aluminium cone. Kroma lists a frequency response of 25 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity of 91 dB and an impedance of 4 ohm, with recommended amplifier power between 30 and 300 W. The cabinet is 54.5 cm high, 27.5 cm wide and 32 cm deep, and each speaker weighs 25 kg.
Engineering and use context
Kroma identifies the woofer as a Purifi unit and the high-frequency driver as a ribbon-type tweeter made to order by Mundorf. The enclosure is made of Krion, a solid surface material produced by the Porcelanosa Group from about two thirds aluminium trihydrate mineral and a small proportion of resin. It is non-conductive and non-magnetic and has high mass, which keeps resonance from the enclosure walls low. The cabinet carries internal bracing, and the crossover is tuned in-house for this driver pair. The weight is high for a stand-mount, a result of the dense cabinet material. Kroma makes a dedicated stand shared by the Macbeth and the smaller Leonore, so the speaker does not have to rely on a generic support. The finish list covers white, black and a set of automotive paint colours - Buckinghamshire Green, Magnetic Silver, Magneto Bronze, Seychelles Blue and Supernova Red.
Pairing
The high sensitivity lets the Macbeth reach normal listening levels with fairly little power, but the low nominal impedance still calls for an amplifier that handles low impedances without strain, which points to solid-state integrated or power amplifiers rather than small valve designs. Kroma's wide recommended power window covers both ends of that range. With its large woofer and deep rated extension, the speaker is intended to run full range in most rooms without a subwoofer, while the dedicated Kroma stand puts the tweeter at the height the company designed for.
Alternatives
Kroma Atelier's Leonore is a smaller Signature Series stand-mount rated at 89 dB and 35 Hz to 25 kHz in a 42 cm tall, 18 kg cabinet.
