The Monitor 40.5 XD2 is a Harbeth three-way monitor for stands, built in the United Kingdom by a company founded in 1977 whose designs grew out of more than 40 years of BBC monitor practice. It follows the M40.3 XD and belongs to the XD2 generation, which brought an upgraded RADIAL4 cone and a reworked crossover to the range. Despite its size it is meant to sit on a stand rather than on the floor.

Engineering and use context

The midrange cone uses the RADIAL4 material that defines the XD2 series, a Harbeth-developed polymer rather than the paper or plastic cones of older BBC-style monitors. The crossover was revised for XD2 to improve integration between the bass, midrange and treble drivers. Each enclosure is hand built and finished in real wood veneer, so colour, shade and grain vary from pair to pair. Finish choices are satin Black Ash, Cherry, Walnut, Oak and Rosewood, although not every veneer is offered in every country. Each cabinet carries one pair of Harbeth-branded 4 mm terminals, and no second pair for bi-wiring is provided. The maker advises placing the speakers well away from walls, and the substantial bass unit together with the tall cabinet suits a larger space than a typical 20 m2 living room.

Pairing

Harbeth suggests amplification from about 35 W per channel upward and describes the speaker as compatible with many types of amplifier, so both valve and solid-state designs of moderate power are workable partners. Given the size and weight, a sturdy open-frame stand of low height is needed to bring the tweeter near seated ear level.
