The DSM-15 is a two-way stand-mounted loudspeaker from Duntech Audio Pty Ltd of Lugarno, New South Wales, Australia. Duntech traces its origins to John Dunlavy, whose first venture, Audio Standards, began in Texas before becoming Duntech Audio and later Duntech International. The DSM-15 is offered next to four larger models, and it is sold together with its own dedicated stand.

Key specs that matter

Duntech measures frequency response at 3.5 m on the tweeter axis and quotes 55 Hz to 35 kHz within 1.5 dB, with the -3 dB point at 42 Hz. Sensitivity is 89 dB SPL for 2.83 V at 1 m, and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. Peak power handling is 500 W for 10 microseconds. A 150 mm polypropylene bass driver works with a 25 mm silk concentric tweeter through a two-way crossover that Duntech calls quasi first order. The pulse coherency factor, a propagation time error taken at the same distance and axis, is below 10 microseconds. With its stand the speaker is 112 cm tall, 25 cm wide and 40 cm deep. The speaker weighs 13 kg and the stand 34 kg.

Engineering and use context

Custom birch plywood and solid American walnut make up the whole cabinet, and walnut is the only finish offered. Unlike the sealed Senator, the DSM-15 uses a rear-vented enclosure. Duntech sources every crossover part individually tested and matched in pairs for the left and right speaker, holding a tolerance of 2 percent, and each finished crossover is tested before it goes into the cabinet. Completed speakers are run for several hours so that the driver surround and spider loosen toward their working compliance, and then every unit is measured again before approval for packing. The dedicated stand has a granite foot and can be filled with sand to add mass. The brand's design rules, inherited from Dunlavy, call for time alignment of the drivers, flat amplitude and phase response at a listening distance of 3.3 m, and wide horizontal dispersion.

Pairing

Duntech asks for an amplifier of at least 60 W RMS per channel. The input terminals are pure high-conductivity copper with gold and silver plating and accept banana plugs or spades, but there is no bi-wiring option, so a single run of speaker cable per side is used. Devialet lists the DSM-15 among the speakers with a SAM profile for its Expert Pro amplifiers.

Alternatives

Duntech lists no other stand-mounted model, since the Senator, Marquis, Princess and Sovereign that complete its current range are larger multi-driver designs.
