The Diamond 12.1 is the middle standmount of Wharfedale's Diamond 12 range, which launched in 2020 and was succeeded in December 2025 by the 12i generation, whose 12.1i took over at the same GBP 249 per pair. Wharfedale calls the 12.1 the all-rounder of the family and positions it both for two-channel hi-fi and for home theatre. In the United States the pair carried a USD 499 list price, cut to USD 399 at the end of its run. Finish options were Black Oak, Light Oak, White Oak and Walnut.

Key specs that matter

The 12.1 uses a reflex-loaded two-way layout with a 130 mm Klarity mid and bass cone and a 25 mm textile dome tweeter joined at 2.6 kHz. It covers 65 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB and 60 Hz at minus 6 dB. Sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and impedance is 8 ohm nominal with a 4.0 ohm minimum. Peak SPL is 96 dB. The cabinet holds 8.2 litres, stands 312 mm tall and 180 mm wide, and is 250 mm deep before 28 mm of terminals are added. Weight is 6.8 kg per speaker. As across the Diamond 12 range, the bass unit is powered by a precision magnet system with an aluminium ring for compensation.

Engineering and use context

Klarity is Wharfedale's name for a woven cone of polypropylene infused with mica, a mix intended to combine rigidity with internal damping. The textile tweeter dome is woven polyester with a high-loss damping coating applied to it. The crossover uses an acoustic LKR 24 dB topology and air-core inductors, a part Wharfedale notes is more usual in higher-priced speakers. The cabinet is built from several layers and has intelligent spot bracing inside to control panel resonance, and the reflex port is on the rear. Two pairs of 5-way binding posts on the back make bi-wiring possible, feeding the bass and treble sections of the crossover by separate cables. The later 12.1i kept these drivers and dimensions but revised the port, internal damping and finishes, so the two generations share the same outer size and weight.

Pairing

Amplifiers delivering 20 to 100 W are recommended. With a minimum load of 4 ohm, an integrated amplifier or AV receiver comfortable with 4 ohm speakers is the sensible match, and the Diamond 12 centre and effects models allow the pair to form the front of a surround layout.

Alternatives

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 is the larger standmount in this series, offering deeper bass reach from a bigger cabinet.
