The Clarity 4.2 is the smaller of two compact standmount models from Radiant Acoustics, a Danish brand formed through a collaboration of three companies connected with Peter Lyngdorf - Nordic Hi-Fi, PURIFI and HiFi Klubben. The speaker is made in Nørager, Denmark, and pairs a single PURIFI Ushindi mid-woofer with a custom AMT tweeter, relying on passive radiators instead of a port. The launch price was USD 2,998 per pair, sold direct.
Key specs that matter
The line-up starts with a waveguide-loaded Air Motion Transformer tweeter, a 4-inch PURIFI Ushindi mid-woofer coded PTT4.0X04-NLC-02 and two 4-inch PURIFI Ushindi passive radiators coded PTT4.0PR-NF2-01. Crossover frequency is 2,300 Hz. Radiant quotes a response of 40 Hz to 22,000 Hz within 3 dB, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a sensitivity of 78 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Power handling is 200 W. Each cabinet measures 164 mm wide, 260 mm high and 194 mm deep and weighs 5.6 kg, or 6.5 kg in its box. Finishes listed by the maker are black or white matte lacquer and walnut or oak veneer.
Engineering and use context
The enclosure bonds 15 mm MDF walls to a CNC-machined 12 mm aluminium front baffle, and horizontal bracing stiffens the cabinet further. BASF Basotect foam handles internal damping. The two passive radiators operate as a balanced pair, so the forces they produce cancel instead of shaking the small box. The crossover is non-magnetic, built with baked coils wound on air cores plus film capacitors of polypropylene. Gold-plated posts accept a single-wire speaker cable, and there is no front grille. Without a reflex tube there is no port opening to account for close to a rear wall or inside shelving, and the footprint suits desks and stands in rooms of about 20 m2. Radiant covers manufacturing defects for 10 years.
Pairing
The low sensitivity means this small speaker needs more amplifier power than its size suggests. Radiant sets a minimum of 60 W and suggests 100 W or more per channel into its nominal load as the ideal. Transistor amplification that copes with such a load makes the most sense, while low-powered valve designs fall outside the stated requirement. Radiant sells matching stands separately with angled top plates to bring the tweeter to the right height and angle.
Alternatives
The Radiant Acoustics Clarity 6.2 is the bigger standmount in the range, using a 6.5-inch PURIFI woofer, two matching passive radiators and a 21 mm MDF cabinet.
