The A.02 is the compact shelf loudspeaker of bärbox, a small German firm that builds every cabinet by hand in its workshop in Lambrecht in the Palatinate, Rhineland-Palatinate. Founder Christian Fischer is a mechanical engineer who previously analysed vehicle body vibrations in the automotive industry, and the career change that led to bärbox came after the COVID-19 pandemic. The company's first product was the B.01, a slender two-way floorstander in solid wood, and the A-series followed with the A.01 tower intended for medium and larger rooms and the A.02 for smaller spaces or more flexible installation. The A.02 costs EUR 2,990 per pair including VAT, which is just under USD 3,000.

Key specs that matter

The A.02 combines a horn-loaded tweeter and a bass driver fitted with a natural-fibre cone. Quoted frequency range is 43 Hz to 20 kHz. Each cabinet measures 38 x 21 x 24 cm and weighs 8.5 kg. Two standard wood and colour pairings are listed - oak with forest green and walnut with dark violet - and other combinations can be ordered on request. Because the wood is selected by hand for each pair and finished manually, grain and surface differ from one unit to the next.

Engineering and use context

The tweeter horn was originally developed for the B.01, where it is set into the front of a 100 cm solid wood cabinet above a natural-fibre mid-bass unit, and bärbox carried it over to this smaller enclosure. In the A-series the horn is shaped from solid wood, with geometry calculated to control dispersion across the listening area. The cabinet edges are rounded throughout and its surfaces flow into each other without sharp transitions. On the underside the A.02 carries mounting points, so it can sit on a shelf or stand or be fixed to a wall or ceiling. The company describes its approach as few products, small series and a large share of handwork instead of mass production, and it avoids following short-lived trends in styling. Fischer names timeless form and solid wood as deliberate choices, because he intends the speakers to work as pieces of furniture in a living space as well as audio equipment.

Pairing

Being passive, the A.02 needs an external amplifier. bärbox rates it at 8 ohm nominal impedance with an efficiency of 87 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, and it publishes no amplifier power recommendation.

Alternatives

bärbox makes no other compact or shelf model, since both the A.01 and the B.01 are floorstanding designs.
