The Aviator Nobile is the bigger of the two bookshelf models in Chario's Aviator family, positioned above the Ghibli and built by hand at the company's workshop near Milan, Italy. Chario designed it around the Reversed Array driver arrangement that runs through the Aviator series, and the cabinet uses curved lines finished in solid Italian walnut. In Australia the pair was listed at AUD 6,499, with a five-year worldwide warranty and parts support promised for 15 years once production ends.

Key specs that matter

A 38 mm tweeter is loaded by Chario's T38 waveguide. Below it in frequency, a 160 mm woofer with a ROHACELL Full-Apex cone and an NdFeB magnet system covers bass and midrange. A fourth-order network crosses over at 1,180 Hz. Rated sensitivity is 90 dB SPL at 1 m with 2.83 V input, and the -3 dB bass limit is 50 Hz, with the upper range extending to 20 kHz. Impedance is 4 ohm nominal, with a minimum of 3.4 ohm. The enclosure stands 440 mm high and is 240 mm wide and 310 mm deep. Weight per speaker is 11 kg, while the shipping carton is 645 x 430 x 560 mm and 27 kg.

Engineering and use context

As on the rest of the Aviator line, the woofer sits above the tweeter on the baffle - the inverted position that Chario says makes it simpler to find a good spot for the speaker in a normal living space. The T38 waveguide allows the tweeter to take over at a comparatively low frequency, and the maker explains that this avoids phase distortion in the midrange, where the woofer would otherwise be approaching its upper working limit. Bass loading is the vented NRS system, exhausting through a downward-facing port in the base. The body is made of HDF with solid walnut, a combination chosen for stiffness and internal damping. Although listed as a bookshelf speaker, the Nobile is described as suitable for use as a monitor or on its optional dedicated stands.

Pairing

Chario recommends amplifiers delivering up to 120 W average power. The low impedance minimum asks for an amplifier that remains stable and delivers current freely into low loads, which points towards transistor designs specified properly for low-impedance operation. The higher sensitivity compared with the Ghibli lets a given amplifier reach higher levels before clipping.

Alternatives

The Chario Aviator Ghibli gives a more compact Aviator stand-mount alternative, with a 130 mm woofer and an 8 ohm nominal load.
