The ava is an active bookshelf loudspeaker from genuin audio, the German company run by Thomas Wendt, a former hi-fi retailer and recording studio owner who also leads a telecommunications network company. It is the bookshelf version of genuin's neo floorstander, built on the same DSP principles in a cabinet half the size.
Key specs that matter
It is a fully active three-way design. A 32-bit DSP replaces the crossover and handles all control tasks, with IIR and linear-phase FIR filtering. Internal amplification totals 1,000 W. Bass extends from 33 Hz. The cabinet measures 55.7 x 25.6 x 43.7 cm and weighs 26.6 kg. The price quoted at Munich was EUR 19,500 per pair.
Engineering and use context
The DSP assigns the woofer, midrange and tweeter their frequency ranges, so no analogue crossover is needed, and it aligns the whole system in time and frequency. Linear-phase FIR filtering makes all frequency components of the signal reach the listener with constant delay, so the system is time-coherent, which genuin's development team has refined since the 1980s. Each driver is measured individually, and the DSP is programmed with filters tailored to those measurements, so every speaker is corrected for its own drivers rather than for an average. Because the amplifiers are built in and each drives its driver directly, the DSP can control the drivers precisely without the losses and interactions of a passive crossover. The long-excursion side woofer has an extra-large voice coil and takes over below 170 Hz, relieving the coaxial midrange and tweeter unit of bass work. Its sensitivity is 93 dB, with a 1 in tweeter and a side-mounted 8 in bass driver, powered by Class D amplifiers with Pascal modules. The neo, from which the ava derives, uses a coaxial midrange and tweeter with a side-mounted 12 in woofer below 180 Hz, a four-channel UMAC Class D amplifier of 1,000 W and 24-bit converters with a 128 dB dynamic range. genuin's aim is a system of a few highly integrated devices, and its Tars music server can feed the ava digitally over genuin's own cable. The ava made its debut at the Munich show within a full genuin system.
Pairing
The ava accepts digital and analogue sources directly, and genuin's Tars music server provides a digital source without extra conversion. The compact cabinet suits rooms of 15 to 30 m2.
Alternatives
genuin audio's neo is the floorstanding version with a coaxial driver and 12 in woofer.
