The Audition CB 2.3 is a two-way bass-reflex compact loudspeaker from AVM, the German electronics maker, and its first small speaker. AVM presented it in Munich in May 2023 together with the CS 30.3 all-in-one system and went on sale in June 2023 at EUR 2,990 per pair. AVM developed it together with the loudspeaker specialist Karl-Heinz Fink, and it is intended as a partner for the company's compact electronics.

Key specs that matter

A 160 mm sandwich-cone woofer handles the bass and midrange, and a fabric dome tweeter sits in a waveguide. The crossover point is 1,850 Hz. Frequency range is 37 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 88 dB at 1 W (2.83 V), and maximum output is 102 dB. Power handling is 140 W. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, falling to a minimum of 3.6 ohm at 240 Hz. The cabinet is 170 mm wide, 285 mm high and 220 mm deep, the front panel measures 220 x 330 mm, and each speaker weighs 4.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The cabinet is made from an ultra-high-density fibre material chosen for its high density and low resonance, so the walls add little output of their own. A sandwich cone combines layers of different materials to raise stiffness without adding much mass, and the waveguide around the tweeter controls its dispersion and matches it to the woofer around the crossover point. The front panel is larger than the cabinet itself, extending beyond its sides, and it is finished in silver anodised aluminium, or in chrome at extra cost. Behind that front, the cabinet body is lacquered in high-gloss black or high-gloss white. A rear leg can be adjusted in height and tilts the speaker, so the tweeter axis can be aimed at the listening position whether the speaker stands on a shelf or a low stand. Magnetic grilles attach without visible fixings. Bi-wiring terminals allow separate cables for the woofer and tweeter sections. The deep bass extension from a cabinet of this size relies on the bass-reflex port tuning.

Pairing

Given its moderate sensitivity and low impedance minimum, the CB 2.3 works with amplifiers rated for 4 ohm operation. AVM designed it to match its own compact electronics, including the CS 30.3 and the Evolution CS 5.3 all-in-one systems, and its power handling leaves room for their output.

Alternatives

AVM makes no other bookshelf loudspeaker at present, since the Audition CB 2.3 is the only speaker in its range.
