The A2+ Next Gen Anniversary Edition is a pair of powered desktop bookshelf speakers from Audioengine, the Texas company founded in 2005, made for the brand's 20th anniversary. The original A2 appeared in 2007, and Audioengine states that more than 300,000 units of the line have been sold. The edition is finished in hand-painted Matte Orange and made in 250 serial-numbered pairs, delivered in a special box signed by the founders. It was announced around 28 July 2025 at USD 279, the same price as the other colours.
Key specs that matter
A Class AB amplifier inside the left speaker delivers 15 W RMS per channel into 4 ohm, with 30 W peak per channel and 60 W total peak. Each speaker has a 2.75 inch aramid-fibre woofer and a 0.75 inch silk-dome tweeter with neodymium magnets. Inputs are 3.5 mm, RCA, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.3, and a variable RCA line output feeds a subwoofer. Frequency response is 65 Hz to 22 kHz within 2 dB, signal to noise ratio is above 95 dB A-weighted, THD+N is below 0.05% and input impedance is 10 kOhm. Each speaker measures about 152 mm high, 102 mm wide and 133 mm deep, and the left speaker weighs 1.72 kg and the right 1.51 kg. The warranty runs for three years.
Engineering and use context
The USB input uses a TI PCM2704C DAC, working at 48 kHz. Bluetooth runs on a Qualcomm QCC3031 or QCC3034 chipset with aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC, at 24 bit for the aptX codecs, with a range of up to 30 m and a latency of about 120 ms. Placing the amplifier in one speaker keeps the second one passive, so it connects with ordinary speaker wire, which is supplied. The cabinets are 6 mm MDF with internal bracing, and both drivers are magnetically shielded, so the speakers can sit next to a monitor. The auto-switching supply accepts 100 to 240 V and draws 5 W at idle. Protection covers output current limiting, over-temperature and switch-on and switch-off transients. The box contains the speaker wire, the power supply and a USB-C cable. At this size the speakers fit either side of a computer screen, and the subwoofer output makes up for the limited bass extension of the small woofers.
Pairing
A computer connects over USB-C, a phone over Bluetooth and a turntable with a built-in phono stage over RCA. An Audioengine or other powered subwoofer connects to the line output for deeper bass.
Alternatives
The Audioengine A5+ is the larger powered bookshelf speaker with a 5 inch woofer and 150 W peak total power.
