The ARCONA 40 SD is the compact stand-mount member of the Arcona SD series from Gauder Akustik of Renningen, Germany, a range that also includes the Arcona 60 SD and 80 SD in 2.5-way floorstanding form, the three-way Arcona 100 SD with twin bass drivers and the Arcona Center SD. The SD suffix marks the switch to a soft-dome tweeter, whereas the original Arcona 40 launched around 2015 used an Air Motion Transformer tweeter with FeNd magnets. That first version sold for USD 4,995 per pair including stands, while the current Mk II SD pair lists at USD 6,975 with matching aluminium stands in the box.

Key specs that matter

Gauder describes the ARCONA 40 SD as a closed two-way shelf and compact loudspeaker, so there is no bass reflex port anywhere on the cabinet. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm and power handling is rated at 100 W. The enclosure measures 36 cm high, 21 cm wide and 33 cm deep, and each speaker weighs 12 kg. Two finishes are listed, piano high-gloss black and piano high-gloss white. The maker does not publish sensitivity or frequency range for this version, and the earlier Arcona 40 was specified as 3 dB down at 42 Hz and 23 kHz.

Engineering and use context

The bass and midrange driver uses the XPulse cone, a thin aluminium diaphragm backed by a very light honeycomb plastic layer, which aims to keep the cone light yet stiff enough to follow fast signal changes. Above it sits the silk soft-dome tweeter. The crossover is symmetrical and uses very steep filters with slopes beyond 50 dB per octave, and in this balanced layout the negative pole is decoupled from ground through crossover parts instead of being wired straight through. A Bass Extension system can lift the region between 30 Hz and 60 Hz so that low-bass output reaches about one octave lower, with six levels chosen by jumper settings or plug-in modules. The drop-shaped cabinet is milled from 22 mm MDF and is meant to cut reflection and diffraction effects while also adding stiffness. Inside, the speaker is wired with Clearwater cable, and the rear carries WBT Nextgen binding posts. Gauder Akustik gives a 10-year warranty on parts and labour to the original owner, and the speaker is made in Germany.

Pairing

A low nominal impedance in a sealed box points toward a transistor amplifier able to supply generous current into low impedance. The adjustable bass extension lets the owner match low-frequency output to the chosen amplifier, and the included stands save a separate purchase.

Alternatives

The Gauder Akustik BERLINA RC 3 MK III sits higher in the Gauder bookshelf range, with a ribbed 43 cm cabinet rated at 120 W.
