The Allegro Unum MKII is the two-way stand-mount monitor of the Allegro Reference series from Sonner Audio, a company headquartered in Merrimack, New Hampshire, and led by president Gunny Surya. The brand took shape near Boston over roughly 25 years before its official start in 2016, and its founders came from careers in industrial and electrical engineering. Sonner splits its catalogue into the upscale Allegro Reference line and the lower-cost Legato line, and the Allegro Unum MKII is also offered as a Signature Edition.
Key specs that matter
A 1-inch ring dome tweeter is paired with a 6-inch custom woofer with a magnesium cone. The crossover point is 2 kHz. Sonner quotes a frequency range of 43 Hz to 23 kHz and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm with a minimum of 5.5 ohm. The enclosure is ported. The Allegro Unum cabinet is about 310 mm tall and 200 mm wide, with a depth close to 460 mm. Finishes are black gloss, white gloss and gloss rosewood.
Engineering and use context
Sonner moulds the enclosure as one curved shell and fits it with an aluminium baffle that slants backward, while the rear of the box is rounded. The company calls its crossover topology Symmetrical Panoramic Design and names control of dispersion, with time and phase coherence kept intact, as its main area of expertise. In the Allegro Unum the network is wired point to point without a printed circuit board, its components are potted in epoxy compound, and each crossover is measured individually for quality control before shipping. A removable leather-covered acoustic panel sits over the front, and interchangeable faceplates in colours such as Blue Lagoon, Buckskin, Chestnut, Orange Spice, Red Poppy and White Pearl are sold as accessories, which allows the appearance to change while the speaker itself stays the same. Sonner specifies a stand height of 660 mm for this monitor.
Pairing
Sonner recommends amplifiers rated anywhere from 3 W to 250 W for the Allegro Unum MKII. The company explains that low and flat impedance variation is a key element of its designs, because it lets the speakers be driven by different types of amplifiers.
Alternatives
For a smaller outlay the Sonner Audio Legato Unum offers a two-way stand-mount in the Legato series, using a 5.5-inch coated paper mid/woofer and 87.5 dB sensitivity.
