TRN launched the Whale Shark, a four-driver hybrid earphone, on 2 October 2025 as a successor to the TRN Shell and TRN Jaws in the company's Marine series. Its name and faceplate pattern come from the whale shark, and TRN presents the four-driver layout as a patented configuration. The launch price was USD 129.99.

Key specs that matter

Per side, TRN combines three dynamic drivers with a single planar magnetic driver. A 10.5 mm dynamic driver with a second-generation beryllium-coated composite diaphragm covers the bass, an 8 mm dynamic driver with a PET diaphragm handles the midrange, a 6 mm dynamic driver with a titanium-coated diaphragm takes the treble, and a self-developed 6 mm planar magnetic driver is assigned to the ultra-high frequencies. TRN rates the frequency response at 10 Hz to 40 kHz, the impedance at 16 ohm and the sensitivity at 110 dB. Each earpiece weighs about 15 g and the cable about 31 g.

Engineering and use context

The four drivers are divided by a three-way crossover, so the lowest band runs on one driver while the upper bands are split across the remaining units. The shell is a liquid metal cavity, and the faceplate uses an openwork pattern with gemstone inlays that recalls the markings of the animal, described by TRN as a hollowed-out sapphire crystal design. Three pairs of interchangeable tuning nozzles, marked with black, green and red rings, screw onto a threaded quick-release mount and alter the tuning, with the black set lifting the treble, the green set aimed at a balanced profile and the red set shifting emphasis toward the bass. The earpieces connect through standard 0.78 mm two-pin sockets, so the cable is replaceable. The supplied lead is a braided hybrid of silver-plated oxygen-free copper and single-crystal copper, built from two strands of 250 conductors each, and it is 1.2 m long with a tolerance of 3 cm. Fifteen pairs of ear tips are included to help with fit and seal.

Pairing

The cable ends in an interchangeable plug system with a 3.5 mm single-ended plug and a 4.4 mm balanced plug, so the Whale Shark can move between a phone dongle, a music player or a home amplifier fitted with a balanced jack. Swapping between the two plugs needs no separate adapter. Owners who want a different cable can use any lead with the same two-pin connectors.

Alternatives

The TRN Jaws is the earlier in-ear monitor from the same Marine series of the brand.
