Koss built the Pro4S Studio for recording and audio professionals as a closed over-ear model with a cable. The company announced it on November 11, 2014, presenting it as the modern continuation of the Pro/4AA, which the Milwaukee company launched in 1970 as its full-size professional model. Koss lists a regular price of USD 149.99, recently discounted to USD 99.99, and backs the model with a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Key specs that matter

Inside each earcup is the SLX40 element, a driver Koss developed for this model and tuned as a reference transducer. The published frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 25,000 Hz, impedance is 35 ohm and sensitivity is 99 dB SPL. The cable is detachable and coiled, and Koss quotes its length as 1.2 m. A 6.3 mm adapter is supplied for studio gear with a large jack, alongside a hardshell travel case.

Engineering and use context

The earcups follow the D-profile outline that Koss first used on the ergonomically shaped Pro/4AAA. That shape mirrors the outline of the ear, and Koss states the resulting seal keeps reproduction consistent from one fitting to the next, which matters when an engineer takes the headphone off and on during a session. The cups are machined from aluminium and carry memory foam cushions wrapped in soft protein leather. A metal headband with a foam cushion covered by breathable mesh spans the top. The whole assembly folds flat to fit into the travel case. The cable arrangement is called dual-choice entry - the cord can be plugged into either earcup, and the unused socket on the opposite cup becomes an output. That lets a second listener tap the same signal for pass-through monitoring, or several headphones be daisy chained from one source, a practical feature for a producer sharing a mix with an artist in the control room.

Pairing

The low impedance and moderate sensitivity make the Pro4S easy to drive from portable players, laptops and audio interfaces as well as from mixing desk outputs, so a dedicated headphone amplifier is optional rather than required. When the pass-through socket is used to feed a second headphone, both sets share the same output, so the source must handle the combined load, and a separate headphone distribution amplifier is the safer choice for tracking sessions with several performers.

Alternatives

The Koss Pro/4AA, the closed full-size professional headphone that the company introduced in 1970, is the other studio-oriented Koss model to consider.
