The Master & Dynamic MH40 Bluetooth headphone, closed-back and over-ear, descends from the company's first over-ear model, launched as a wired headphone in 2014 with a vintage aviator look. A first wireless version followed in 2019, and the current second-generation MH40 Wireless went on sale on 14 March 2023 at USD 399, EUR 449 or GBP 399, which was USD 100 more than the earlier wireless model. It keeps the metal grille on the ear cups and the mix of metal, coated canvas and leather of the original design, and it comes in several colour combinations of metal finish and leather.

Key specs that matter

Custom 40 mm drivers with titanium diaphragms are rated at 32 ohm. Bluetooth 5.2 gives a range of up to 30 m and supports SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz. The battery lasts up to 30 hours per charge, against 18 hours for the first wireless version, and 15 minutes of charging gives more than 6 hours of use. Charging and digital audio both go through a USB-C port. The headphone weighs 280 g. Supplied accessories are a woven cable with USB-C plugs at both ends, a USB-A adapter, a USB-C to 3.5 mm cable, a flight adapter and a canvas pouch.

Engineering and use context

Compared with the first wireless model, which used Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC and aptX, the 2023 version moves to Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive, letting supporting Android handsets stream high-resolution files while the codec adjusts its bit rate to the radio conditions. The ear cups are aluminium, the headband is covered in coated canvas and the ear pads are lambskin leather, removable so that worn pads can be replaced. Active noise cancelling is absent, so isolation relies on the closed cups and leather pads alone. For calls a dual microphone array uses the company's own wind reduction processing, and the M&D Connect app adds sidetone so the wearer hears their own voice, along with several EQ presets. The digital USB-C connection passes audio from a laptop or handset free of Bluetooth compression, and the supplied analogue cable allows wired listening from a conventional analogue output.

Pairing

Any Bluetooth phone, tablet or laptop can drive the MH40, while Android devices with aptX Adaptive get the highest supported resolution and Apple devices use AAC. For in-flight systems the supplied adapter works with the analogue cable.

Alternatives

The Master & Dynamic MW75 is the over-ear wireless model with beryllium drivers and adaptive active noise cancelling.
