The M4U TWM is a cable-free in-ear model built by PSB Speakers as part of the brand's M4U headphone collection. PSB calls it a micro planar design, because each earbud combines two different transducer types inside a sealed housing, and it links to phones and computers over Bluetooth using the aptX Adaptive, AAC or SBC codec at an operating distance of up to 10 m.

Key specs that matter

PSB fits every bud with a hybrid planar dual driver layout with a 6 mm driver size quoted by PSB. A high frequency Magneto-Static driver handles the top octaves, while a dynamic planar driver covers midrange and bass. PSB rates the frequency response at 20 to 20,000 Hz within plus or minus 1.5 dB. One charge of the buds gives 8 hours of playback, and the charging case stores three further charge cycles, worth 24 hours of extra listening. Charging the buds takes 66 minutes, and refilling the case takes 2 hours from a 5 V, 1 A input. Each earbud weighs 5 g and measures 18 x 22 x 17 mm, and the case is 64 x 36 x 32 mm. The finish is black.

Engineering and use context

The case charges via a USB-C socket or on a wireless charging pad, so no cable is required at home or at work. An IP65 rating means the buds are dustproof and resist sweat and water. Microphones in the buds work with cVc clear voice capture processing, which lowers background noise picked up during phone calls. Physical click buttons on the earbuds change volume, skip tracks and handle calls. PSB packs silicone tips in three sizes for a secure seal and passive noise isolation. The free PSB Headphones app runs an Audiodo Personal Sound hearing test and builds a personal profile for the user, adds Volume Dependent Compensation that adjusts the response as the listening level changes, and offers four EQ presets. PSB also applies its RoomFeel tuning, which is based on research into how a well-designed room shapes the output of good loudspeakers and aims to reduce the feeling of the music sitting inside the head.

Pairing

With amplification and conversion built into each bud, a source only has to support Bluetooth. A source that supports aptX Adaptive uses the first codec in the list, and devices without it connect over AAC or SBC. The PSB Headphones app is needed only for the hearing profile, the presets and updates, not for basic playback.
