The KPH7 Colors is a wired on-ear headphone at the very bottom of the Koss price list, sold by the company at USD 5.49. Koss aims it at learning labs, schools and libraries, where many identical headsets are handed out and replaced, and describes it as affordable and ultra-light. The Colors name refers to the spread of finishes - Black, White, Deep Red, Violet, Light Green and Deep Blue - which also makes it easy to tell one set from another in a shared room. A separate KPH7 Wireless model with Bluetooth 5.3 and a fold-flat frame exists alongside it, so the Colors suffix marks the plain corded edition.

Key specs that matter

The headphone uses dynamic elements with a quoted frequency response of 80 to 18,000 Hz. Impedance is 32 ohms and the sound pressure level is rated at 91 dB SPL. A straight dual-entry cord, 1.2 m in length, ends in a standard 3.5 mm connector. There is no microphone or inline control. Koss grants the KPH7 Colors its Limited Lifetime Warranty, the cover the brand uses for corded headphones.

Engineering and use context

Koss built the KPH7 Colors around an over-the-head band with small cups that rest on the ears, and the company adds that it has a contemporary style. The company states that the dynamic drivers were chosen for an extended frequency response, although the published lower limit of 80 Hz shows that deep bass is outside the design goal. For spoken word, language courses, educational video and general computer audio, that bandwidth covers the relevant range. Because each earcup has its own lead from the splitter, the cable does not run across the headband. With no batteries, pairing process or charging routine, the KPH7 Colors works the moment it is plugged in, with nothing to configure before a lesson. The low price keeps the cost of a lost or broken unit small in shared use.

Pairing

The analogue plug lets the KPH7 Colors connect directly to tablets, laptops, desktop computers and older phones with an analogue jack. With its modest sensitivity rating the headphone needs more drive than high-sensitivity earbuds, so a source with some spare volume headroom is the better match for it. Newer phones without a jack need a USB-C or Lightning adapter, as the headphone has no digital input.

Alternatives

The Koss KPH30i is a USD 29.99 on-ear model with an open-air design, a patented suspension headband, an inline microphone and remote and a 15 to 25,000 Hz response.
