The KE7 is an entry-level wired earbud from Koss, the Milwaukee headphone maker, sold as a two-pack with one black and one white pair in the same box. It is designed as an inexpensive, lightweight replacement or spare set for phones, tablets, laptops and portable players, and the pack format means one pair can live in a bag while the other stays at home, or the two can be shared.

Key specs that matter

Each pair uses dynamic drivers in a classic earbud housing with a frequency response of 60Hz to 20kHz. Impedance is 16 ohms and sensitivity is 98dB SPL. The cord is a straight, dual-entry 1.2m (4ft) lead terminated in a 3.5mm stereo jack, and each set weighs only a few tens of grams. There is no microphone or in-line remote. Koss backs the KE7 with its limited lifetime warranty.

Engineering and use context

The KE7 is a traditional earbud rather than an in-ear monitor. An earbud rests in the outer bowl of the ear instead of sealing inside the ear canal with a silicone or foam tip. This makes it quick to put in and remove, comfortable for people who dislike the pressure of sealed tips, and keeps the listener aware of surrounding sound, which is useful when walking or working in shared spaces. The trade-off is lower isolation from outside noise and less low-frequency output than a sealed design, which is reflected in the quoted low-frequency limit. The 16-ohm impedance is typical of portable earphones and allows the drivers to draw more current at a given voltage, so even the low-voltage headphone outputs of phones and small players can reach useful levels. The dual-entry cable runs a separate lead to each earpiece from a splitter, the conventional layout for wired earbuds. With a simple fixed cable and no electronics in the line, there is little that can fail beyond the cable itself, and the low price and two-pack format make the KE7 practical as a spare, a travel set or an everyday pair for children and students.

Pairing

The 3.5mm plug connects directly to phones and tablets with a headphone jack, laptops, portable players, in-flight systems and school or library computers. On phones without a jack, a USB-C or Lightning headphone adapter is needed. Being an efficient low-impedance design, the KE7 needs no headphone amplifier, and a dedicated amplifier would add little to an earbud of this type.
