Engineering and use context

Each cup carries a 44 mm high excursion driver. Its ring magnet system, according to the maker, gives better airflow around the membrane and a magnetic field it calls the strongest of any driver in this class. Winding the voice coil from copper-clad aluminium lowers moving mass for a faster impulse response, while an ultra-stiff membrane damps its own resonances. The hinges and headband bow are all metal, and the cups fold for transport. Ear pads and headband pads use slow-retention memory foam, which spreads clamping pressure over long sessions. Austrian Audio describes the whole headphone as 100 percent serviceable, so pads, cables and other parts can be exchanged individually instead of retiring the unit. The closed cups also suit tracking, since little of the playback leaks into a nearby microphone, and they reduce the amount of outside noise reaching the ear in a busy control room, on a stage or while travelling. Pairing

Being an easy electrical load, the Hi-X60 reaches working levels from the headphone output of an audio interface, a mixing console or a computer, and the short cable makes a phone or portable player practical too. The supplied adapter covers studio gear and hi-fi amplifiers with a full-size jack. A separate headphone amplifier adds headroom but is not needed for normal monitoring levels.
