The Hadenys is an open-back circum-aural model that Focal presented in May 2024 alongside the closed-back Azurys, with sales starting in June 2024. It was priced at USD 699 (CAD 899) and GBP 599, and carries a six-year warranty. The mocha brown finish takes its inspiration from the Hadean, the geological eon in which the Earth first formed. Focal positions the open design for use at home, and it is built in France, with the drivers made at the Saint-Etienne workshops.
Key specs that matter
A 40 mm wideband electrodynamic driver sits in each cup, fitted with an M-profile dome in an alloy of aluminium and magnesium. Impedance is 26 ohm and sensitivity is 100 dB SPL at 1 mW and 1 kHz, while maximum output reaches 105 dB SPL peak. Harmonic distortion is below 0.2% at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL. The frequency response is 25 Hz to 22 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. The headphone weighs 294 g without its case.
Engineering and use context
The drivers are shared with the Bathys wireless model introduced in October 2022. The rear of each cup is closed only by a grille with a hexagonal honeycomb pattern, which leaves the back of the driver open to the room. Magnesium yokes keep the mass low, and the leather-covered headband adjusts in steps. The body is mostly plastic with metal accents on the headband core and cups, and the cups turn through 90 degrees so the headphone can lie flat. The earpads are memory foam covered in a breathable fabric and can be removed and replaced. A single unbalanced 3.5 mm TRS socket on the left cup takes the cable, so balanced operation is not possible, and the connectors do not lock. Aluminium in the dome brings rigidity against distortion, and magnesium brings damping.
Pairing
Its modest power needs allow the Hadenys to run from smartphones, portable players and modest desktop amplifiers as well as from full-size home equipment. One 1.8 m cable with a mini-jack plug is supplied, together with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter for home amplifiers and DACs. A colour-matched zip-up carrying case with a cable pocket, measuring 21 x 24 x 7 cm, is included. Because the cups are open at the back, it is best used in quiet surroundings rather than on public transport.
Alternatives
The Focal Clear MG is another wired open-back headphone from the brand, placed higher in the range.
