The Gemini II is the second generation of true wireless earbuds from the French audio company Devialet. Devialet announced it on 13 September 2023 as the successor to the first Gemini of 2020, with smaller buds and a smaller case than before. The launch price was USD 449, EUR 399 or GBP 349, while an Opera de Paris edition with 24-carat gold plating cost USD 649, EUR 599 or GBP 549.

Key specs that matter

Each bud carries a custom 10 mm high-sensitivity dynamic driver with a titanium coating, and Devialet specifies a range of 5 Hz to 20 kHz. Active noise cancellation reaches up to 40 dB, and an ambient mode lets outside sound through when needed. One charge of the buds gives about 5 hours, and the case raises the total to 22 hours, which charges by USB-C or on any Qi-certified wireless pad. Bluetooth 5.2 carries aptX, AAC and SBC, and multipoint pairing keeps the buds linked to two devices at once with automatic switching. The IPX4 rating covers rain and sweat. Every bud weighs 6 g and measures 16 x 23 x 26 mm, and the case weighs 49 g at 65 x 39 x 27 mm.

Engineering and use context

The noise cancelling is a hybrid design that combines feedforward and feedback microphones and runs under the name Devialet Adaptive Noise Cancellation. Two microphones sit in each bud, one facing outward behind a grille and one facing down, and a bone conduction sensor detects the voice of the wearer during calls. Active Wind Reduction lowers wind noise automatically, both for music and for phone calls. The buds lock in place with a screw-in motion, and the box holds silicone tips in four sizes - XS, S, M and L - with the M pair already mounted. A touch surface on the logo handles pause, track skip, volume and switching between noise cancelling and ambient listening, and these gestures can be customised, something the first Gemini did not allow. The companion app adds a six-band equaliser. Colours at launch were matte black, white and the gold Opera version.

Pairing

The Gemini II needs no amplifier or DAC and connects straight to a phone, tablet or computer over Bluetooth. Android phones that support aptX can use that codec, while iPhones and iPads fall back to AAC. With multipoint active, a laptop and a phone can stay paired together, and the buds move to whichever device starts playing.

Alternatives

The original Devialet Gemini from 2020 is the earlier true wireless model of the brand, with a larger case and no multipoint pairing.
