The Crusher 540 Active is a wireless over-ear headphone from Skullcandy built for gym and workout use, adding sweat protection and a firmer grip to the Crusher line with its adjustable vibrating bass system. It lists at USD 209.99 and comes in Smoke, Forest, Soft, Coal and Concrete colourways, backed by a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
Key specs that matter
Inside every cup is a 40 mm full-range driver, and Skullcandy adds a pair of separate bass drivers for the tactile Crusher effect. Frequency response is quoted as 20 Hz to 20 kHz, impedance as 32 ohm within 15%, output between 95 and 100 dB and distortion below 1% at 1 kHz. Bluetooth 5.0 carries the signal over more than 10 m in open conditions. The battery lasts up to 40 hours, a full recharge over USB-C takes about one hour, and a 10 minute top-up gives more than 4 hours of play. The headphone weighs 312 g.
Engineering and use context
A slider on the back of the left earcup sets the strength of the bass drivers behind the full-range units. For training, the housings get a nano-coating against sweat and water, although Skullcandy gives no IP rating, and the earpads use breathable fabric instead of leatherette to limit heat build-up. The headband is covered in wipe-clean PU leather, and the clamping force was set so the headphone stays put during movement. The frame folds flat and collapses for carrying. Physical buttons take care of calls, skipping tracks and level, holding the top and bottom buttons for two seconds resets the headphone, and a double press on the middle button of the right cup calls up Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa. Skullcandy advises chargers of no more than 18 W at 5 V.
Pairing
Phones, tablets, laptops, music players and the Nintendo Switch pair over Bluetooth, while PS4 and Xbox One consoles are not supported. A backup AUX cable is supplied for wired listening. In the Skullcandy App a three-minute hearing test in a quiet room builds a Personal Sound profile that adjusts playback to the listener, and the app also switches EQ modes and customises the buttons. A USB-C charging cable is included in the box, and the integrated microphone handles calls through the same Bluetooth link. Skullcandy markets the model as a workout headphone, and the Clamp Force fit together with the coated housings reflects that use.
Alternatives
The Skullcandy Crusher Evo is the everyday version of the same concept, pairing full-range drivers of the same size with adjustable bass drivers and built-in Tile tracking.
