The ATH-M70x is a closed-back professional monitor headphone that Audio-Technica introduced in 2015 as part of its M-Series, launched alongside the open-back ATH-R70x. The maker lists studio mixing and tracking, front-of-house work, DJing, mastering, post-production, audio forensics and personal listening as its intended uses.

Key specs that matter

A proprietary 45 mm large-aperture driver sits in each circumaural earcup. Audio-Technica specifies a frequency range of 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz, together with 97 dB sensitivity, an impedance of 35 ohms and a maximum input power of 2,000 mW at 1 kHz. Weight without cable is about 280 g, and the pack also includes a carrying case. Three detachable cables come in the box - a coiled lead extending from 1.2 m to 3.0 m, a 3.0 m straight lead and a 1.2 m straight lead - each ending in a gold-plated 3.5 mm plug, with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter supplied.

Engineering and use context

The drivers combine rare earth magnets with copper-clad aluminium voice coil wire, a lighter conductor than solid copper, to keep moving mass down. Audio-Technica built the chassis with key metal parts for durability. The earcups swivel 90 degrees, so an engineer or DJ can keep one ear on the monitor feed and the other free, and the circumaural shape seals around the ear to block outside noise in loud environments such as a stage or control room. Earpads and headband are made from professional-grade material and can be detached and replaced when worn. Unlike the smaller ATH-M40x and ATH-M50x, the M70x frame does not collapse, which trades compact folding for a sturdier structure. The choice of three cable lengths covers a mixing desk, a DJ booth and portable use without extension leads. Because every lead detaches at the earcup, a damaged cable can be swapped in seconds during a session instead of sending the whole headphone for repair, and a spare can be kept in the case. The tuning goal Audio-Technica set for this model was accurate reproduction of extreme low and high frequencies, which is why the published range extends well beyond the limits of the audio band.

Pairing

Its easy electrical load lets the headphone play loud enough straight from a computer, a recording interface or a phone, while the high input rating leaves plenty of margin for a mixer or a dedicated headphone amplifier through the screw-on adapter. In a studio the coiled cable suits a console, whereas the short straight cable fits phone and tablet listening. The closed design keeps leakage low when tracking vocals near an open microphone.

Alternatives

The ATH-R70x is the open-back sibling from the same 2015 launch, rated at 470 ohms with 98 dB sensitivity and a lighter frame of about 210 g.
