The ATH-M50xBT2 is a closed-back, over-ear Bluetooth headphone from Audio-Technica, announced in August 2021 as the successor to the wireless ATH-M50xBT. It keeps the folding frame and studio-derived hardware of the M50x family while adding a new wireless platform, and its launch price was GBP 179.99 or EUR 199.

Key specs that matter

Inside both earcups sits a proprietary 45 mm large-aperture dynamic driver, and the published bandwidth spans 15 Hz to 28,000 Hz, sensitivity is 99 dB/mW and impedance is 38 ohms. Bluetooth version 5.0 carries the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles, and the supported codecs are LDAC, AAC and SBC. Line-of-sight range is approximately 10 m. A 3.7 V lithium polymer cell gives up to 50 hours of continuous use and needs about 3.5 hours for a full charge over USB-C, while a 10-minute top-up returns roughly 3 hours of listening. The headphone weighs approximately 307 g.

Engineering and use context

Rather than relying on the Bluetooth chip alone, Audio-Technica fitted an AK4331 DAC and a dedicated internal headphone amplifier to drive the transducers. Multipoint pairing keeps two source devices connected at once, so a phone and a laptop can share the headphone without re-pairing. For calls there are two omnidirectional MEMS microphones with beamforming, rated at -38 dB sensitivity and 85 Hz to 15,000 Hz response, plus sidetone circuitry that feeds the wearer's own voice back into the earcups and an easy-to-find mute button. Earcup controls handle volume, playback, calls and mute. Amazon Alexa is built in, and Google Assistant and Siri can also be reached. The A-T Connect app adds EQ adjustment, codec selection, a low-latency mode intended to keep audio in step with video and games, and a function for locating the headphone. Earpad and headband materials are the professional-grade type used across the M-Series, and the frame folds for storage in the supplied carrying pouch.

Pairing

LDAC makes Android phones and players with that codec the most capable wireless partners, while iPhones connect over AAC. The bundled 1.2 m cable allows a wired connection to laptops, audio interfaces or portable players, and charging uses a short 30 cm cable with Type-A and Type-C ends. Because the amplifier and converter are inside the earcups, no external headphone amplifier or DAC is needed in wireless use.

Alternatives

Within Audio-Technica's range the earlier ATH-M50xBT is the wireless M50x model that this version replaced.
