The ATH-ADX5000 is an over-ear reference headphone from Audio-Technica with an open back, built on what the maker calls Core Mount Technology, with a magnesium frame and Alcantara padding. Every pair carries its own laser-etched serial number, and it ships in a hard carrying case designed specifically for it. It was unveiled at IFA 2017 in Berlin and reached shops in November 2017 at EUR 2,190, while the American MSRP was USD 2,000, and production is hand-assembled in Japan.

Key specs that matter

The 58 mm integrated driver units combine a tungsten-coated diaphragm, the baffle and a Permendur magnetic circuit in a single assembly. Quoted frequency range is 5 Hz to 50,000 Hz, sensitivity 100 dB/mW, impedance 420 ohms, and maximum input power 1,000 mW. The headphone weighs 270 g. Its detachable 3.0 m cable uses A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors at the earcups and terminates in a gold-plated 6.3 mm stereo plug.

Engineering and use context

Integrating the diaphragm, baffle and magnet into one unit reduces unwanted vibration, and because no screw clamps are needed the assembly also weighs less. Core Mount Technology places this driver unit in a chosen position inside the housing to improve airflow. The baffle is a highly rigid composite of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and glass fiber, intended to keep diaphragm movement stable, while the tungsten coating raises diaphragm rigidity for better transient response. The housings follow a honeycomb-punched pattern that leaves the outer face open to ventilation but closes off the sides, which blocks side venting to prevent air pressure loss. The magnesium frame keeps the structure rigid, thin and light. Alcantara covers both the earpads and the headband for comfort and durability. As with any open-back design, output leaks outward and outside noise passes in, which suits home listening in a quiet space.

Pairing

The high 420-ohm impedance calls for a dedicated headphone amplifier able to deliver generous voltage swing, and the full-size plug matches the full-size jacks found on desktop headphone amplifiers and integrated amplifiers. The A2DC sockets allow a replacement or balanced cable to be fitted later without modifying the earcups.

Alternatives

Audio-Technica's ATH-ADX7000, released in December 2025, raises the impedance to 490 ohms and adds a diaphragm formed by HXDT molding.
