The ARYA UNVEILED is a HIFIMAN planar magnetic headphone of open-back, circumaural design, announced on 12 November 2024 and listed at USD 1,449. It continues the Arya line, which earlier included the original Arya, the Arya Stealth Magnet version and the Arya Organic, and it borrows ideas from the HE1000 range, in particular the Unveiled concept of removable back covers.
Key specs that matter
HIFIMAN specifies a frequency response of 8 Hz to 65 kHz, a sensitivity of 94 dB and an impedance of 27 ohm. The net weight is 413 g, a figure that excludes the Magnetic Veils and the headphone cable. The cable plugs into the earcups through 3.5 mm input jacks, so the headphone can be used with aftermarket cables that follow the same standard termination.
Engineering and use context
Inside the driver is a nanometer-thickness diaphragm, under a millionth of a metre thick, based on the SUSVARA design. A very thin membrane has little mass to move, which is the reason HIFIMAN gives for its fast response and wide dynamic range. The magnet system uses Stealth Magnet technology, an asymmetrical, double-sided magnetic circuit that gradually adjusts the magnet gap and its cross-sectional shape on both sides of the diaphragm. The aim is a magnet structure that is acoustically transparent, so that sound waves passing through it meet less diffraction turbulence. A window shade grille design increases the open area and exposes as much of the driver as possible, reducing reflection and refraction at the outer surface. The removable Magnetic Veil is a back panel that attaches magnetically and protects the open driver when it is fitted. Taking the veils off leaves the rear of the driver fully exposed through the grille, which is the configuration the name refers to. As an open design, the headphone leaks sound and lets outside noise in, so it suits quiet private listening rather than travel or shared offices.
Pairing
Given its impedance and sensitivity figures, the ARYA UNVEILED is relatively easy to drive for a planar model, yet a dedicated desktop amplifier for headphones or a converter with a strong headphone output gives more headroom than a phone. Balanced aftermarket cables can be used with amplifiers offering balanced outputs, since the earcup sockets are standard jacks.
Alternatives
The HIFIMAN HE1000 UNVEILED is a higher-priced open planar headphone using the same veil concept, rated at 95 dB sensitivity and 28 ohm.
