The Hydra Triton is a power distributor from Shunyata Research, the company based in Poulsbo, Washington, led by designer Caelin Gabriel. It is the reference model of Shunyata's Hydra range and has appeared in three generations, v1, v2 and v3, with the Typhon as a matching add-on.

Key specs that matter

The Triton is passive, with eight outlets in the US version (NEMA 5-20R) and eight CEE 7/3 outlets in the EU version, fed by an IEC C20 inlet. Maximum continuous current is 20 A in the US and 16 A in Europe. Peak instantaneous current exceeds 200 A, and maximum surge current is 40,000 A. Overcurrent protection is a hydraulic electromagnetic breaker. The v3 uses patented NIC and QR/BB technologies, four CCI v3 noise filters and a CGS ground noise reduction system, with four ground lugs. The chassis is 16 gauge powder-coated steel with an anodised aluminium faceplate, measuring 438 x 435 x 152 mm and weighing 18.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

A power distributor sits between the wall outlet and the components of a system. Shunyata's approach avoids series filtering that could limit current, since amplifiers draw large peaks, and instead uses parallel noise absorption. NIC, Noise Isolation Chambers, contain a ferroelectric material that absorbs high-frequency noise. CCI filters isolate groups of outlets so that noise generated by one component's power supply does not reach another. The Zero-Point Power Distribution System links all outlets to a single contact point through an all-copper buss, keeping the impedance between outlets low. Shunyata designs with its DTCD analyser, which measures dynamic current delivery. The CGS system and ground lugs let owners connect component chassis to a common ground, reducing ground noise. Connectors and conductors receive Shunyata's ArNi cryogenic treatment in its own plant. Vibration-absorbing gaskets isolate the outlets from the chassis. The Typhon, a passive add-on of the same size, connects in parallel through a short umbilical and adds further noise absorption, a solution Gabriel devised after the original single-box Triton prototype grew too large. Shunyata states that many recording studios and manufacturers use the Triton as a reference.

Pairing

The Hydra Triton suits complete systems, including power amplifiers, with Shunyata power cables. The Typhon can be added later for further noise reduction.

Alternatives

Shunyata also makes the Everest 8000, another power distributor from its range.
