The TR-1100 is an open-reel tape recorder from Analog Audio Design of Pleumeur-Bodou in Brittany, the French company founded by engineer Christophe Martinez that began with the playback-only TP-1000. The TR-1100 combines recording and reproduction in a single transport and follows five more years of development after that first deck. The maker lists it as available from November 2026, and international pricing had not been published at announcement. Reel motors are sourced from Switzerland and the heads from a Belgian firm that also supplied Studer.

Key specs that matter

It records and plays 6.35 mm tape on 2 tracks and 2 channels, with a DIN track width of 2.7 mm, and holds reels of up to 30 cm. Three tape speeds - 30, 15 and 7.5 ips - are selected by switch, speed accuracy is within +/-0.05%, and pitch can be shifted +/-100% at a resolution of 0.01 ips. Wow and flutter figures, weighted to DIN 45507, are under 0.030% peak at 30 ips, 0.045% at 15 ips and 0.09% at 7.5 ips. Frequency response reaches 30 Hz to 25 kHz at 30 ips, 22 kHz at 15 ips and 20 kHz at 7.5 ips, all +/-2 dB at 0 VU. Measured as THD-N, the signal-to-noise ratio is 71 dB at 30 and 15 ips and 70 dB at 7.5 ips, rising to 78 and 77 dB with A-weighting. The bias oscillator runs at 180 kHz, and erasure is at least 70 dB at 1 kHz with a 90 kHz erase frequency. Distortion is 0.8% or lower at 1 kHz and 15 ips, while crosstalk between channels is 60 dB or better. Each unit measures 466 x 519 x 305 mm and weighs 28.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The recorder carries its own wave generator and audio analyzer, and a built-in touchscreen runs the automatic calibration of bias, recording level and equalisation for the tape in use. Record and reproduce equalisation switch between the NAB and IEC curves, and the reference flux can be 320 or 514 nWb/m. A belt links the capstan to its DC servo motor, each spool turns on a direct-drive servo motor, and fast winding runs at 2, 6 or 10 m/s. The power supply accepts 90 to 264 VAC and draws no more than 250 W.

Pairing

Inputs and outputs use XLR sockets that can be set for balanced or unbalanced operation. Control runs over Ethernet on an RJ45 port or through an infrared receiver, and a headphone output delivers up to 1.5 W into an 8 ohm load.

Alternatives

The TP-1100 from the same maker shares the same 30, 15 and 7.5 ips transport but is built for playback only and cannot record.
