The PS 3100 HV is an external power supply from T+A, the German electronics maker from Herford, designed for the A 3100 HV power amplifier and the PA 3100 HV integrated amplifier of its HV series. It was announced in September 2026 at EUR 13,900 and USD 19,490. Connected to either amplifier, it takes over the supply of the output stages, and the amplifier's internal supply is left to power the input stages and high-voltage circuits. It succeeds the PS 3000 HV.
Key specs that matter
The transformer is rated at 1200 VA. Filter capacitance totals 240,000 µF, spread over 24 custom capacitors, which is double the filter capacitance inside the amplifiers themselves. The supply can deliver up to 1,200 J of stored energy to the output stages. It connects to the amplifier with an M-23 Special Powerlink cable. Rated mains consumption is 1800 W, and standby consumption is below 0.5 W. The unit measures 460 mm wide, 170 mm high and 460 mm deep and weighs 38 kg. Finishes are silver or titanium lacquer with a black cover over the ventilation grille.
Engineering and use context
Wiring the 24 capacitors in parallel lowers the internal resistance and inductance of the capacitor bank, compared with a smaller number of large capacitors of the same total value. Lower resistance and inductance let the bank release current quickly when the output stages demand it during loud passages, and the stored energy figure is a measure of how much it can deliver before the voltage drops. Separating the supplies also isolates the sensitive input stages from the large current draws of the output stages, since each now has its own transformer and reservoir. A processor controls the soft start, which limits inrush current when the large capacitor bank is charged at switch-on, and it also manages current limiting as a protection measure. The front VU meter has been redesigned to match that of the A 3100 HV. It can display either the stability of the supply voltage or the current flowing to the output stages, giving a view of how hard the amplifier is working. The PS 3100 HV matches the width of the HV series components it powers, so it can stand alongside them in a rack.
Pairing
The PS 3100 HV cannot be used with other amplifiers, only with the two HV series models it was designed for. Both amplifiers keep working without it, using their internal supplies for all stages.
Alternatives
The T+A PS 3000 HV is the earlier external supply for the A 3000 HV and PA 3100 HV amplifiers.
