The PD5 is a portable digital audio player from Astell&Kern, the South Korean company known for its high-resolution players. It succeeds the A&norma SR35 and was shown at the Hong Kong AV Show. Its main feature is an eight-DAC architecture that can switch between four and eight converters to balance performance against battery life.
Key specs that matter
The PD5 uses eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs. It supports PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256. Outputs are 3.5 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced, five-pole only. Battery life is up to 28 hours in Quad-DAC mode, with PD 3.0 fast charging taking about two and a half hours. Wi-Fi is dual band, and Bluetooth 5.3 supports aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. It is Roon Ready and certified for Qobuz Connect. In Octa-DAC mode the balanced output rises from 6 Vrms to 8 Vrms and battery life falls to about 15 hours. Storage is 64 GB and microSD cards of up to 1.5 TB can be added. The display is a curved 4.1 in 720 x 1280 screen, the chassis measures 69.7 x 119.7 x 16.1 mm and the player weighs 198 g. The processor is octa-core.
Engineering and use context
Dual Drive Mode lets the listener choose between Quad-DAC mode, which runs four chips for efficiency and longer battery life, and Octa-DAC mode, which runs all eight for wider dynamic range and channel separation. Quad-DAC battery life is eight hours longer than that of the SR35. EnviroTune analyses ambient noise and adjusts playback to suit the surroundings without simply raising the volume. ESA, Enhanced Signal Alignment, minimises group delay. TERATON ALPHA is Astell&Kern's technology for removing power noise, managing consumption and stabilising amplification. Digital Audio Remaster upsamples PCM to 384 kHz and DSD to DSD128. Four DAC filters can be selected. Crossfeed simulates the spatial impression of speakers on headphones, and ReplayGain normalises volume across tracks. As a Bluetooth sink, the PD5 can receive audio from a phone, and USB-C connects it to a computer as a DAC. Firmware updates are delivered over the air. A side-mounted physical control wheel adjusts volume. Its aluminium chassis is designed to fit in one hand.
Pairing
The PD5's balanced output drives demanding full-size headphones as well as in-ear monitors. Roon and Qobuz Connect make it part of a home streaming setup.
Alternatives
Astell&Kern's A&norma SR35 is the predecessor of the PD5 with four DACs.
