The Gunnr is a gaming DAC and headphone amplifier from Schiit Audio, the American company founded in 2010 by Jason Stoddard and Mike Moffat, with assembly in Texas. Launched in October 2024 at USD 229, it replaced Schiit's Hel. It combines high output power with analogue soundstage controls, a microphone input and the ability to run from a single USB-C cable.
Key specs that matter
Output is 2,000 mW RMS per channel into 16 ohms, 1,500 mW into 32 ohms, 800 mW into 50 ohms and 200 mW into 300 ohms. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.2 dB, THD is below 0.0004% and signal-to-noise exceeds 114 dB A-weighted, both at 2 V. Headphone output impedance is 0.25 ohms. The DAC is an ESS ES9018, accepting up to 32-bit/384 kHz over USB and 24-bit/192 kHz on optical. Inputs are USB-C and optical, with a dedicated TI ADC for the microphone input. There are three gain settings, including negative gain, and an analogue preamp output. The headphone jack is a Neutrik part, and the volume control is a custom high-match Alps potentiometer. The unit measures 145 x 102 x 40 mm and weighs 340 g. It works with PC, Mac, PS4, PS5, Switch, iOS and Android.
Engineering and use context
Two front-panel knobs provide Schiit's Soundstage Control. Width expands or contracts the stereo image, and turning it left blends the channels. Presence brings forward or suppresses the frequency region to which hearing is most sensitive, where voices and small sounds such as footsteps sit. Both are analogue controls working on any source regardless of surround format, and both can be bypassed for a pure signal path. The optical input suits games consoles and televisions that output digital audio. Linear Override is a power arrangement that lets the Gunnr run from USB-C alone for portable use, or from the supplied wall adapter for higher power and volume. The three gain settings, including negative gain, set the right level for sensitive in-ear monitors as well as demanding headphones. The microphone input has its own analogue-to-digital converter for voice chat and podcast-quality recording. Protection includes over-current protection against shorts and wrong connectors, thermal protection and ESD protection. The chassis is fastener-free with a solid milled aluminium knob. Customers who do not need the higher power can buy it without the wall adapter and save USD 15.
Pairing
The Gunnr drives headphones from sensitive IEMs to demanding full-size models. Its preamp output feeds powered desktop speakers.
Alternatives
Schiit's Fulla is the brand's smaller USB DAC and headphone amplifier with a microphone input.
